that tutorial uses paint shop pro and animation shop. you can download a free demo of those from jasc.com, or you can just use windows paint and a free gif animation program. (for the animation program, a good free one is gif construction set professional by alchemy mindworks.)

Blinkie: little boxes with letters in them, and the boxes blink, so they are called blinkies.
