Hi, I've been having a load of computor problems recently and I don't know what's gone wrong or what I should do and I'm getting kind of desperate. Can anyone here help me, please?

OK, it all started when I downloaded Eudora, I installed it, restarted my comp and everything worked fine. But when I turned my machine back on a few hours later it instantly connected to the internet! but I couldn't get at any websites or disconnect (in one place one my control panel it said I was connected in another it said I wasn't). I tried to turn off my comp but it froze. Next time I tried to turn it on I disconnected my modem first, the machine tried to dial but couldn't so told me so and that my websharing needed a dial tone. Once I'd managed to get rid of those dialog boxex (which took ages cos my comp's so slow now), I was able to plug in the modem and connect by clicking my IE icon. Able to view pages fine, if only for about 10 mins before it slowed to virtual stop.

I thought I'd got it figured it out with the websharing, so I looked around and turned it off. I haven't got that message since but it still tries connect on startup even though there's nothing in my startup application file.

What's happened? It took me nearly 4 minutes to load one of Lissa's tutorial pages the other day ~ it's really starting to annoy me. What should I do?

I run an iMac OS 8.6 and it all started before the week sobig virus kicked off. (I've been trying sort it out on my own for a long time;) ) Any suggestions? Is it a virus or a worm or something? Or is my comp just too old to function properly?

Thanks soo much :hugs:

How do you do that? I can't afford a new comp and besides, this darling's served me pretty well ~ I wouldn't want to just abandon it ;)

if you want to keep yoru "darling" i woudl suggest you buy a new mother board, cpu, hard drive, video card, sound card, network card, etc. etc. you can still keep yoru "darling", its jsut you gave her an operation and fixed her up a little bit. then i would suggest taht yo uswitch to an updated version of mac, or use mac osx, or switch to teh much easier to use windows. (just because it is easier most certainly does not mean it is better)

So is it a virus?

Not necessarily, it probably just needs some upgrading. I would get it checked out by a professional. Is there a computer store or something you could call to see if they can check it out? Anywhere that sells computers can probably help you, but if your warranty has expired it may be pretty costly. It may be cheaper just to buy a new system.

Thanks for your help. Yes there's a company near me, I'll have to take it to them soon. I was hoping to avoid taking it to a specialist by sorting it out myself ~ but this is beyond me :( And yep, my warranty's expired. Should be fun. Don't you just hate those unexpected expenses *Grrrr*.

Oh and by "buy a new system" do you mean a whole new computor?
