i cant seem to get the custom error 404 page to work, i.e. when i try it out by typing to view a page of my site that doesnt exist, i get the standard error page not the one i specified in the .htaccess file.

one possible cause might be that i have named the .htaccess page incorrectly - i have saved it as .htacess.txt - is this right??

no, the htaccess part is the extension already. there should not be any txt afterwards.

just to be sure, should the .htaccess file be named '.htaccess' or 'filename.htaccess'??

just name it .htaccess

I'm having the same problem. Are you working with frontpage at all?

dont use frontpage it's evil. save it as .htaccess in note with all files selected in the view file type thing.
