I just got an extremly disturbing warning from a "protect your computer" advertisement. They said someone from I.P adress **.***.***.** is currently getting all my information of some sort when I log in my email address, purchase items online, e.t.c Then it said "Click here now to download (program name here) to protect your computer. When I clicked it, it took me to their homepage and said "Your I.P. address is **.***.***.**" and it was the same I.P that they warned me about. I'm not sure of the EXACT quote..but Is it just to scare people to get more downloads? Just an advertisement? I'm not sure of the program name, but any assistance or input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance :waving:

P.S. How do I know what my I.P address is? Where can I go to view it?

don't quote me on this because I really have no idea, but my guess is that its spyware- just like Gator, BonziBuddy and the like. generally theres some small stupid program that the ads convince you that you need, and they come with some spyware.

I guess there is some risk anytime you're online, because someone could damage your computer using an IP address. but that can be corrected with a firewall.

Yes it is just to scare people and seriously do NOT install any program that proxy-masks your IP unless either you've written it yourself or you trust explicitely whoever wrote it.

This is definately just a scam to get you to buy "security software".

All the ad does is a simple JS call to display your current IP address in the ad banner. Just ignore it - or kill it using a pop-up killer.

Having said that - you should use a decent software firewall in addition to decent anti-virus software. There are free ones available but as is often the case - you get what you pay for!

I use a combination of ZoneAlarm Pro & Sophos Anti-Virus.

Ok, thanks for the many comments!

I think I'm behind a fire wall, though? Sometimes, when I try to directly connect to another aim member in order to show them a image/graphic it sometimes says "unable to connect, you may be behind a firewall".

I'll download a pop up killer in a few minutes. Again, thanks everyone! :waving:

Some fo the newer versions of Windows (e.g. Win2000) don't have winipcfg. If it doesn't work try run > command --- then type "ipconfig"
