Actually, it's to prevent the biasing of election results. :P

It's like that one punk in the crowd who starts clapping at the most inappropriate time in a play/gig/what-have-you and causes everyone else to clap whether they normally would or not. People would behave the same way when voting because generally, people are sheep.
