In all my years, i have never seen anythign like what has been witnessed with the playstation 3 launch. XBox was bad, but this is horrible.

Here is my discussion:
My money is on the Playstation 3. It will take the lead and win the console wars, For SURE. Sure the Xbox had a head start. But a head start means nothign when the other system is clearly better.

Lets look at the facts:
-The XBox NEVER sold for $15100 on ebay launch day.
This is the highest legitimately sold next gen game system to date. Nobody was willing to pay this for another system, and it seems that the playstations "outrageous' (which is actually more than reasonable) price is being overlooked in this world.

-The comparable XBox with an hd-dvd player is THE SAME PRICE as the PS3. AND, you cannot play XBox 360 games built on an hddvd without this better system. hmmm, starting to think that the XBox isnt all its hyped up to be?

-The PS3 is a more powerful system, and despite being harder to develop for, game makers CRAVE this power, and so, games will be ported.

-The PS3 is 100% backwards compatible, assuming software is up to date. The XBox does not have this benefit, almost at all.

-The XBox has much better online play. But in all reality. The percent of games sold specifically for online play is small, miniscule even. Supporting online play in a console is nice, but again, the market percent is WAY too small to say that one system will gain market popularity because of great online play. All a consumer wants to see is that it SUPPORTS online play, the rest means nothing for the most part.

-The wii is childish and useful for two things: Drunk games, and keeping children occupied.

-Nintendo doesnt have enough market share right now to make a good name of the system. If the wii does pul ahead, it wont be for a good 4-5 years. Much too long for Xbox and Sony to think of something better (Like for instance, the playstation 4 not using disks at all, but instead hard drives (except for maybe backward compatability))

And lets not forget to mention that Sony has VOWED to take a huge leap in the online play provided. And it will be free. So sony probably wont lose much of a share in the online market if they play their cards right.

Now, i am not a sony fanboy. I am jsut looking at the facts. I think the war will be close, but in the end, sony will come on top.

PS3. Sony has more market shares, more PS2s' and PSOnes' in every home (I personally have one) than Microsoft does for the Xbox. I do think that Nintendo should stick to making handhelds - although they've made a few good consoles (namingly the N64, and the GameCube isn't bad) and they've got good classics. However, gaming these days is all about power.

In my opinion I'd just buy a PC. Why? Well, because, for one thing, you can now run PS2/PS1 games on your PC (http://www.pcsx2.net/), and, well the PC is much, much more powerful, for one reason. It keeps getting more and more powerful every day. nVidia and ATI are working on better GPUs and graphic cards, and RAM and CPUs are expanding with more power on the horizon.

I also don't like the fact that you HAVE to get a PS3 to play games. I like to multitask. Why can't I play 007, whilst listening to my MP3's and programming my website? Well, I don't have a grudge against Sony, it's just I prefer PC's. And my final reason.

You can EASILY make your own games! No fussing around with Sony's programming language, libraries and other stuff. Just GML, Game Maker or C++ - anything really.

Thanks for reading,
Tom

PS: I voted 'PS3'

PS3.

The Playstation line has been my favorite since it came out. I'll put my money on it after the wave of bugs go by. Apparently the thing over-heats in less than 5 minutes, is NOT backward compatible, and some OS issues. HOWEVER, despite these bugs, the PS3 it WAY more powerful than the XBOX 360. I've seen an XBOX 360, and I have to say, that things cranks out graphics so fast and easily I don't think Sony can match the power of the XBOX soon. I don't like the XBOX line because A) The games aren't ported to any other system; it's a small little group of developers. Enter the Playstation.

There are hundreds more developers working on Playstation games then there are XBOX games. Plus, who liked the design of the XBOX controllers? The Playstation controllers are more compact in a good way; no stretching fingers to reach buttons. I hate the XBOX controllers. The loading time on PS games are faster than the XBOX time, and who likes waiting?

I voted for the PS3.

I'm not into gaming, but I think either Xbox 360 or PS3 will win. I think it'll be in the top 2.

I'm not voting in the poll.

As close as it may be, the PS3 isn't (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=playstation+3%2Bbackwards+compatibility&spell=1) 100 percent backwards compatible.

How ironic, though. My uncle and I were talking about this at dinner tonight.

i am a fan of wii, but in this case, ps3 would be the answer.

in canada, many retailers didnt get any units for sale.

many pre-orders were given the decision to downgrade to 20g version or cancel the order.

so in the stores, we have rental games, sellthrough games, and accessories, but very few people have the actual units... sigh... looks like another X360 scenario. same deal happened when that unit came out.

I'm a fan of the Wii as well (having just ordered one and all) but my vote is 100% PS3.. they pretty much own the gaming market, XBox just has Halo :P

I actually am a Sony fangirl, but I keep thinking that if Nintendo ships more units than Sony did to North America (only 500,000), they might be able to even the odds. Though the Wii is a lot cheaper and more compact, that UGLY UGLY UGLY controller gets to me everytime. :lolo:

I LOVE that Nintendo controller! *fights* :P

I chose Wii, because I want it to win.

Let's look at the facts guys. The PS2 sold just above 100 million units. The gamecube and xbox both sold in the low 20 millions. The PS3 is going to win with flying colours, yet again.

Microsoft is already out of the game. They have only sold 5.5 million so far, and it has already been a year. If this tread continues, which I highly doubt it will because now Microsoft has competiton (wow, Microsoft actually having to compete!), then they will have only sold 27.5 million after 5 years (the life expectancy of the current generation).

Unless Nintendo can make a miraculous come back, there is no way in the world they will beat out Sony. This really is out of the question however, since it seems almost farfetched that Nintendo will be able to beat out a company that has 80 million more fans than they do. However, it seems Nintendo has been aiming at wider audience hoping to bring more newbies into the gaming world. Really their only chance is to create new fans instead of stealing Microsoft's of Sony's.

As for me, I'm sticking to PC gaming. I don't want to be playing a machine that will be obsolete a year from now. Just look at Crysis... a PC exclusive. Can the consoles match that?

I heard only 200,000 were shipped???

Nintendo Co.'s entry into the game console wars, the Wii, went on sale yesterday, and quickly sold out in many U.S. stores despite stocks that far surpassed those of the rival PlayStation 3, which went on sale two days earlier.

The launch apparently went smoothly, a contrast to the PlayStation 3 release, which forced police to disperse rowdy crowds at some stores around the country. Sony had about 400,000 PlayStation 3s in North American stores on Friday. Nintendo has said it would have "five to 10" times as many Wiis available at launch, and will have shipped 4 million units by the end of the year.

On top of (initially) selling more units than the PS3, Nintendo is currently the only company among the three who makes a profit on each console sold. Add in revenue from games, accessories and Wii Channels content and you have one fine example of laughing all the way to the bank.
