i would like to try my hand at making a full page filtered guild layout, but i'm unsure as to what size the background etc should be...i have a picture i created a while ago, but now i'm worried it may be too big...

also, what graphic elements are required to make a full page guild layout...?...is it possible to just have one large background that covers the entire screen...?

A custom non-pattern/tile background image is hard to settle on when it comes to size... remember that different screen resolutions do exist. You should consider a pattern/tile background; it will make things so much easier for you. If you are adamant on your image though, just settle for it not being perfect on every existing resolution size.
