It's is possible. But I think that you can get frozen...so I wouldn't try.

Here's a list of guidelines that Neopets had about this subject. Hope it helps.

You MAY:
Cover the image of your Neopet with an image you drew, or were given by a friend with their permission to use.

You may NOT:
Cover or alter the stats of your Neopet.
Cover the text or alter the text at the top that states your Neopet's name, species, and colour.
Cover it with the image of a different official Neopet image. (For example, please do not cover the image of your yellow Cybunny with that of a plushie one.)

You may NOT remove the shield from the lookup page this WILL get you frozen, BUT you may cover it up. Please see Neopian Times Issue: 230 | 9th day of Running, Y8 Editorial, this tells you that you can cover it up, but not replace say a 2 week shield with a 5 year shield. I hope this help.
