Hey you all

I have a question about Search Engines...I just put up my first website, and it is not listed on any Search Engines. I really want it to be listed @ Google, Yahoo and so on!!! But I don't know how to get it listed, nor do I know how to get it listed in the right category. Does anyone know how to get your website listed @ Google, Yahoo etc.? And if so - Do I have to put in some keywords 'bout what the site is about, or is my URL enough??? Someone; Please lemme know about this :) I could really need some site traffic, and I'm all new at this. And I figured that getting my site listed on various Search Engines would be a great way to get people to check it out :D I hope someone are able to help me out with this!!! It would mean a lot to me. Thanks in advance!

I'm just trying to be more helpful around here that's all! ;)

I think you'll have to browse around those two sites! I really don't think you'd have to pay to get in.

I don't think you can submit your site to Google. however, Google periodically crawls the web, and that's how results are determined- I think the way it works is the more links there are to a site, the higher it is in the results listing. new sites should also get picked up during their regular crawl.

also, Yahoo uses Google for their web search results. if your site is indexed by Google, you will have the exact same position on Yahoo. same goes for AOL search. when they say "Enhanced by Google", they really mean "All our results are exactly the same as Google, but our results pages don't look as good" :P

Hey

Thank you so much for replying :) That's really nice of ya! I will definitely check out the link!!! Thanks a ton! You rock!!! Hopefully, I will not have to pay to submit my link.

Ohhh...So I can't submit my link to Google! That's really too bad. It's a good thing that Google periodically crawls the web though. Does that mean that if my site was entitled "Sabrina Sommers" and people searched for that, my website would come up in the results listing??? And the more times "Sabrina Sommers" was mentioned on my website, the higher it is in the results listing??? Say "Sabrina Sommers" was mentioned ten times on my website and five times on someone elses - My website would be no.1 on the results listing and the other peoples website would be no.2 on the results listing???

Because I think I recall reading that it was possible to 'learn' how to get listed on Google. But you're 100% sure that Google periodically crawls the web, and that's how results are determined?

And by saying that the more links there are to a site; The higher it is in the results listing - Do you mean what I described above or do you mean that the more sites that link my website; The higher it is in the results listing?

It's awesome that new sites should also get picked up during their regular crawl!!! Hopefully, mine will too :D I would love for more people to get to check out my new music site!!!

It's great to know that Yahoo uses Google for their web search results! Thanks for filling me in on that!!! It's really nice of you to let me know that if your site is indexed by Google; You will have the exact same position on Yahoo & AOL Search. And when they say "Enhanced By Google" - They really mean "All our results are exactly the same as Google, but our results pages don't look as good" :P LOL That's so funny!!! *hehehe* Thanks for letting me know!

I really hope that Google's web crawler finds my website!!! *fingers crossed* Too bad there's no way to submit my site to Google, cause it would be great to get listed there ASAP!

Thanks for helping me out with this!!! *hugz*

Actually, you don't submit your site for google, or yahoo for that matter. They find you. What you do, is you make a meta tag, with a description, key words of your site.

Then after about 24-72 hours, your site will most likely show up under a search.

Hi Jared

Thank you so much for letting me know :) That was of great help to me! It's great to know 100% sure that you don't submit your site to Google!!!

But how do you make a meta tag??? And what is a meta tag? Please lemme know!

And about the description and the keywords - Am I just gonna post about what my site is about then? And then Google finds my website when people search for the words I put in my lil description?

It's great that after about 24-72 hours; My site will most likely show up under a search!!! Weee! I wanna learn what a meta tag is ASAP so that my website will show up under a search sometime soon ;)

I can't wait to hear from someone about meta tags! Thanks again for all the help!!!

This is some info i compiled on my site for SEO which might help in this situation.

What Search Engines and/or Directories Should I Submit My Website To?
The first question should really be, what are the major Search Engines and Directories?

Major Search Engines To Submit To-

Google (http://www.google.com)- Often called the greatest search engine on the Internet, it is also the most popular according to recent Nielson/NetRaitings polls. This search engine is entirely free for the primary listings, and offers paid listings at the top of the search results, as well as thier AdWords program which shows small text banners on the right hand side of the search results. Google bases its search results on website content as well as their patented PageRank algorithm which factors in links from other websites to determing your rank in the search results. Submit to this website at http://www.google.com/addurl.html and your website should be in the index within a month sometimes two.

Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) - Second most popular, and probably the most famous of all search engines, this icon among web portals does not currently offer its own search results and instead uses Google for its primary results. If you would like to show up in the Yahoo.com search results, submit your website to Google at http://www.google.com/addurl.html . Yahoo recently purchased Inktomi to use as their primary search results, but this will probably not take effect until late 2003 -2004, but if you would like to get ahead of the game, submit to Inktomi as well at http://free.submit-it.com/msnsubmit.htm

MSN.com (http://www.msn.com) - The third most popular search engine MSN also outsources its search engine algorithm. In order to show up in the MSN search results you will either have to be enrolled in the CPC Directory Looksmart.com, or you will need to be listed in their secondary results provided by Inktomi, which you can submit to for free here -
http://free.submit-it.com/msnsubmit.htm

Inktomi - Inktomi is a provider of search engine results but does not operate a search engine portal iteself. This is a very important index because it powers MSN, and was recently purchased by Yahoo!. To submit to this index go to http://free.submit-it.com/msnsubmit.htm

AOL (http://www.msn.com) - This popular search engine also uses Google search results as its primary and paid listings. See Google.

AllTheWeb (http://www.alltheweb.com) - Recently purchased by Overture, this may be a very important search engine down the line, and is already considered one of the most relevant search engines on the Internet. I highly suggest submitting to it, as it currently powers Lycos and part of HotBot. Submit to http://www.alltheweb.com/add_url.php

AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) - One of the oldest search engines on the Internet, AltaVista is showing its age. Low relevancy and low traffic are the best ways to describe this engine, however it is still probably worth submitting to at http://addurl.altavista.com/addurl/new

AskJeeves / Teoma.com (http://www.ask.com and http://www.Teoma.com) - The Teoma index powers both the popular AskJeeves.com website and its sister site Teoma.com. You can only get into this index through being found via the Teoma Crawler, or via paid Inclusion setup which you can get through http://www.positiontech.com/askjeeves/index.htm

The above are the main search engines on the web which you can submit your website to, if you know a website that is not on the above list, chances are it is using search results from one of the above search engines or indexes.
Major Internet Directories -

DMOZ.org (The Open Directory Project) - owned by AOL, and operated by a team of volunteers, the Open Directory Project or ODP is the largest FREE active Internet Directory. This is THE place to be for a website on the Internet. It is the definitive directory, and is referenced by all of the major search engines. The only problem is that there are 3 million websites in the directory, and more than a million in the que waiting to get in. Getting into this directory can take 3 - 6 months, and thats if you qualify. Make sure to read their guidlines for creating a Title and Description before submitting, and make sure you are submitting to the most relevant directory.

Yahoo! Directory - at $300/Year this directory carries a heavy price, but may still be worth your while. If you can fit it into your advertising budget I would recommend it, but usually only if you really have an extra $300 per year lying around. The benefit of this directory may increase as time goes on, but as of right now, this is probably not worth your time or money.

LookSmart Directory - This is actually a Cost Per Click service that looks like a directory. You'll pay $0.15 per click and you aren't guaranteed a position or click volume. If done correctly this directory might do well for your website since it does provide the main results for the third largest search engine on the Internet (MSN.com), but this is sctrictly a budget and judgement call as you can get similar results for free from Inktomi.

-Other Good Free Directories With a Catch-

Gimpsy.com - Free directory with some weird requirements. The index tries to use "real language searches", for example "Compare Insurance Rates" would be a directory structure Compare >> Insurance Rates , Insurance Rates being the subcategory. A little tricky but worth submitting to.

GoGuides.org - great free directory, the only catch is that they want you to become an editor. Which basically means that before you can submit a URL you will need to fill out an application. The bonus is that once you are accepted your link goes online immediately.

JoeAnt.com - Same deal as GoGuides.org. If you have the time to apply to become an editor, then you can list your site. Worth your time in my opinion, but its up to you.

Zeal.com - Great directory, which will get you into the LookSmart directory for FREE! The catch is that your website has to be strictly informational and non-profit. Some exceptions are made, but in order to get in you will either need to know an editor and ask them to submit for you, or become and editor yourself like with GoGuides and JoeAnt, however I hear the application process is more difficult.
