I have an idea about a new contest we could have.
How about a graphics contest with certain judges. the catch is that you can ONLY use Paint and some images like off google image search or other image programs.
What cha think?

I like the idea of having those limitations...it would make it more exciting and challenging :)

Kira, could you tell me a little more as to what you have in mind with using the images and editing with Paint?

:blob: collages?

:blob: alteration of images (ie. changing a face if the pic is a portrait)

:blob: adding text?

:blob: going negative/stretching/skewing the image?

The only reason I am asking, is because usually when I edit with Microsoft Paint, I am mostly interested in working with the pixels, doing very close-up work (ie. one pixel at a time -- like when creating icon formats) -- and usually this creation deals with editing my own original work, not with alteration of other images -- but I have done this as well.

Note: -- I think we need to be sensitive to copywrite laws of the images we find on Google, as well

I'm interested in more of your ideas/further details for this contest!

 xx dee

P.S. amazing things can be done with a simple graphics editing program, btw

ok. here are what the contest rules could be:
1. Make a 500X150px Welcome Banner.
2. Add any text/images you like.
3. Respect the copywright laws on google image search images.
4. No cheating, (as in taking a premade banner and just copy and pasting it in paint and saving it.)
5. You may use use only MS Paint, Windows Media Player if you like, Image search program or images on your computer.

OK. Those are the rules so far. If anyone would like to add to them feel free to. :)

Question: (and you might think I ought to know this, LOL)

Kira, how do you format MS Paint to give you an image size of 500 x 150 px to begin with?

lol. ok. Open paint, go to "Image", go down to "Attributes", Then a little popup thing should come up. Then set it for pixels. 500X150.

Excuse me for double posting, but this is my submission.

The image of the woman is an open source stock photo from Broderbund, and I have a reduced sized example of the original image source, .jpg here:
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/lady_batchic/Woman_relaxing_b_s_320x243.jpg

Since this image is in black and white, it needed increased colour depth before being able to be worked in MS Paint, which I did with my IrfanView editor, (which is a free editing tool easily obtained on the Internet) before pasting this cropped selection into Paint. Initially, I focused on the outside edge of the woman, using close-up pixel magnification of 88x with a grid, and painted the entire background one solid colour. The orb-designs required the Ellipse tool, and most of the decoration was done with pixel work at high magnification with a grid. I imported other small selections of my own artwork through paste, and refilled any jagged cropped areas with the background colour at high magnification.

The lettering is a mixture of Papyrus and hand-calligraphy extentions, done with the diagonal paintbrush (small sideways stroke), in white. I decided to "repaint" the second line in grey, so I reworked these pixels at high magnification with a grid, and overview window. The extra orbs that fill in the "O's" of the text, as well as the exclaimation point, were worked in after I had dropped the text in. (This is a very old idea that has been done in Calligraphy decoration, called Illumination, and I thought it would be an interesting look to introduce to this MS Paint Banner exercise.) The exclaimation point "stem" was done by hand. Btw, when you work with Paint at such a high magnification in tandem with a grid, it feels like you are working with embroidery stitching -- and so many of the traditional designs/techniques that can be used with embroidery for colour work can be applied here.

One last note, when saved as a (Windows) Bitmap file, the colours are brighter than when saved as a .jpeg. The difference of file size, however, is really amazing. ie --> 219 Kb for bitmap, 56 kb for .jpeg.

I decided to show you the example in bitmap, so that you can see the bright yellows and reds that I used in this work.

This was grand fun! I will look forward to seeing some more examples of banners done with MS Paint, by members of LEIA.

Ok. I have mine. :)
I used the following picture for my bg.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i197/Rubys_originals/screeny.jpg
Original Good Charlotte Piccy.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i197/Rubys_originals/gc.jpg
And this is the picture I croped, with paint. I used the weird shape creator thing where you just click to connect the edges and I filled all of the white background of the image with a birght green. Then I pasted it in to my back ground and I made sure the secondary color was bright green and I selected the tool that matches the color and makes it seethrough.
Sorry If I am confusing.
I used the black square to make the grids. (took forever) and OI used the font CAC Valiant and all of the pink around the W in welcome was done pixel by pixel. Um.... well...thats about it. I saved it 4 different ways.

Great Stuff, Kira. Very inventive, and a crisp image, as well. :star2:

Here is a submission for you, in return. I took the photograph of Death by Butterfly with black and white film with my slr camera, at a live outdoor stage performance. To continue with the "punk music' theme, I created a black and white check border on the top, and played with primary colours. Sweet and simple. And done with MS paint!

Oh, and thanks for your pointer about saving as a png file. Gives a much crisper image than a jpeg, but does not take up as much room as a bitmap file.

Sorry about the double post...

I'm thinking about cupcakes now, for some reason, so I started with this picture:
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m279/elveen/11840.jpg
From a search on photobucket.

Then I pasted it into paint and changed the attributes, and filled the rest of the width of the banner with the red color.

Next, I made the "Welcome" text with Action Jackson font. I did it in black first, then the yellowish color, to create the drop-shadow illusion. I did the same thing for the smaller "To My Site!" text.

I added the image borders with the rectangle tool. Lastly, I added my name with Redensek font. Here's the final result:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v692/pinkangelcupcake/cupcakebanner.png

That's what I can do with Paint... good luck in the contest everyone!!

Also, please check out my topic called "Site Name: POLL!" and vote for what domain name I should register... thanks a ton if you do!

Perhaps you could start another Thread Idea for creating Welcome Banners with Macromedia Flash, ponygrl2. Kira thought up this Thread to see if we could create just with Microsoft Paint . . . and you know, there is a bit of a challenge with this.

:lolol: I'm not insisting . . . but it might be an interesting project to consider. Myself, I don't own Macromedia Flash . . . so I wouldn't know where to start with designing a Flash welcome banner.

I've done some fairly simple limited animation graphics with some very basic software . . . and this has kept me entertained for quite some time.

I wonder how many other LEIA members would like to submit an animated welcome banner for fun. Any ideas? :cheer2:

p.s. here is an example of a journal banner I created with Animation Shop. I had it posted on my deviantART journal section for several postings. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/lady_batchic/AnimationBatLogtitle.gif

All I did was to create colours of circles, plus I copied and pasted a picture of me, and drew a speech bubble (like the one in cartoons) and added text.
