Ok, I have a icon journal and it is sort of popular and my abdnwitch is being used up. Is there anyway to stop direct linking on LJ? Its not my own domain so I can't really do anything about it. :( Does photobucket take .htaccess files? So I could try to stop it - any help would be appreciateds I'm so lost

You could tell everyone to save the images to their own server and link to them that way, and hope that people will be honest and do so.
Otherwise, I would suggest talking to LJ support and asking them if they can help do anything.

Photobucket doesn't support .htaccess but you can stop some direct linking with the (semi effective) no right click script in your page code. Before adding the script, change the file name of the images. (So no one who remembers the addy can use it.) Like I said this is semi-effective but every drop of prevention helps.

The problem with that is that LJ doesn't support Javascript, because they see it as a security risk to other LJ users.

That, and there's no access to the head tags of the journal, unless the user has a paid account.

Hmm what a challenge. How about a .htaccess file and the images hosted at a site like Ripway? That way the images do get protected.

The problem with that is that they'd be direct linking to the icons as well to get them to show up in their LiveJournal. If they started directing everyone to their Ripway account to see the icons, then it would probably work, but that would be such a hassle because people don't like to play the link game. Also, they'd have to move all of their other icons to Ripway and edit all of the LJ entries to prevent direct linking to all of those, as well.
So, unless they're prepared to do all of that work [which could take a long time if there are a lot of icons and a lot of entries], then I suppose it could work. It just seems too time consuming.

I would go with the no right click script. :)
Its sort of effective. On my graphixs website..I saved all my images as .zip and made them download them. lol
