It stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is basically a program that allows you to transfer large numbers of files from one place to another with ease.

like a file manager? (uploads)

FTP is not really a program.. its a protocol, a standard internet protocol. you can use it for downloading and uploading.. you -can- say its something like a file manager but not exactly. its like a way of communication and things sort of go through it.. whereas a file manager is not exactly that..
