Does anyone here play guitar? I know at some point there was a few people... Or so I think... I don't remember who though. I have been looking to learn for atleast a year now, but I haven't had the motivation, or the money for that matter. My uncle has his own band and he plays, but when he was saying I should learn he even admitted he couldn't teach me because he learned on his own, so he couldn't really properly show me things. I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem learning on my own, I have picked up about 5 wind instruments plus drums and piano on my own, so I know my music. I just wasn't sure:

What's better to learn on: Accoustic or electric(And I'm not the bass type, so don't say that :P)? I'm assuming accoustic for that matter...

What's a good (not even neccesarily beginner) brand/type? I want something for my money, but I don't want something too cheap or beginner-ish... I know Fender is good, I've also seen I think Ibanez or something? I know there's a few other big ones I've heard of, just can't think of them all.

What other accesories would I need besides the obvious, like picks and strings?

I'm probably going to buy off of Musicians Friend, I have used them in the past for recording equipment, and they have never done me wrong. Okey... I think that's all.

Thankyas

I have a small student First Act guitar that was at Wal-Mart for 30 bucks

I really want to learn, but I don't have the time. I think teachers would be better than self-teaching, but...

Fender is AwEsOmE. I got to jam on the one at church :D It was sick :geek:

Well, a Fender Strat is pretty much a staple in every electric guitar player's queue :) You can learn on electric or acoustic, it's just a different sound.. but just because it's electric doesn't mean you have to plug it into an amp!

I can't play, but I dated a guy who was a great guitar player, and my dad is also very good apparently. :)

I got my guitar about a year and a half ago. It's a fender. I kind of quit playing it for a while but I recently got back into it. XD I can't get a teacher though, so I'm learning on my own.

I have heard ibanez is good too. And in addition to picks and strings you might want to get a tuner. They're really handy.

I got an accoustic guitar for my birthday a year ago. It's an epiphone if that means anything!
I can play some chords and read notes and tune it with a tuner. I usually don't play it a lot, but I'm sure I'd get better if I tried.

I have a guitar. I have been playing for 1 year. I know some songs. Im so cheep. XD I bought and electric First Act from walmart. Its pretty good. Hmmm. I think electric is easier to learn on, but really its the same difference. Acoustics strings are a little harder to press down, unless you get nilon strings, (WHICH ARE AWESOME, btw.) I think playing is a lot of fun. When you finnally learn a song you feel so good about it. As for lessons, I took lessons for about 4 months, 1 a week. And I missed about 4 practices.
SO really you can teach your self. I ussually just listen to a song that sounds pretty easy to play and go on google and look up TABS for it.
Tabs are pretty easy to read. lol. a lot easier than sheet music. Hmmm. If you listen to Rock, some easy songs to play are "Brain Stew" Green Day, "Sweet Home Alabama" Lynyrd Skynyrd, And "Hitchen a Ride" Green Day, The first part of "Jesus Of Suburbia" Green Day, is pretty easy too.

Well. Sorry for rambling so much. I hope I was of some help. lol

Rock On!

The chords for 'Hey Jude' by The Beatles are pretty easy, I learned them once :D

I've been trying to learn for a little while now. I'm not good at all, but I still have fun.

I think most people think it's best to learn on an acoustic but electrics are easier. For accessories all you really need are lots of picks and maybe a tuner. A capo is nice to have too.

I don't know much about buying a guitar since mine was a gift.

Hey Jude has barre chords, I hate barre chords. :(

Eight Days a Week by the beatles is really easy though :P

Hey :) I've been playing guitar for about six years and am about to go on tour with my band. Here is a couple things that might help you on your way to learning how to play guitar..

Firstly accoustic is prob going to be your best bet for learning on you can't really make a distorted guitar sound truly good untill you can make a clean guitar sound good. But hey I learned on an electric so idk. Also tabs are amazing if you can't read music (Like myself lol) so look into those or Guitar tab programs I would name some off but I think that might be considered advertising. But hey anyways learn scales like no other and play guitar along with other songs it's the best way to learn new techniuqes :)

In terms of brands, Takamine, Ovation, Fender, Gibson, Epiphone (Gibson's economy line), and Ibanez are all pretty safe bets. I strongly recommend that you don't order your guitar online, though. That's one instrument that's all about the feel. Find yourself a local music store and sit yourself down for a couple of hours until you find something that makes your fingers shine with happiness; don't tie yourself to brand names, either.

The best thing that you can do for yourself and your hands while learning is to do so on an acoustic guitar. This is because the strings tend to be thicker and the necks tend to be wider, so you have to stretch and strengthen your fret hand a lot more to slide, fret, and bend your way through all of those wicked-gnarly chord progressions and solos. It will definitely be harder at first, but that's the point. If you work your hand to the point where you can easily barre, bend, fret, and slide on an acoustic guitar, then the first time you have the chance to pick up a Fender Strat or Gibson Les Paul after that will make you wonder what need you could ever possibly have for a significant other. ;)

The only real downside to learning on an acoustic is that you have no volume control when you need to stay up just a little later to learn those last couple verses of Stairway to Heaven. :guitar:

Unfortunately, I don't play any musical instruments. =( I guess I'm not that talented. Oh well. (Actually, it's not that, it's the fact that I never tried or had anybody who could teach me.) I would like to know how to play the piano my second choice would be the guitar. I love listening to music but I haven't a clue how they do it. I can sing. My friend and I were bored and started a "band" which sounds awful but my friend can't sing and she knows that perfectly well.

:) Thanks for the help everyone. As of earlier I still had a few choices, but finally made my decision. So I bought the guitar, a case, a capo, strings, and picks.

I need to call my old band director and tell him I want my tuner back. I have a meisel, it's like an $80 tuner/metronome. They are amazing. Well, I bought one, that's what most good players have, and its the one he picked to have for the schools use for rehearsal and whatnot. Well, mine got used one day in class because magically ours disappear and the batteries died. Well, I never got it back. So him or the students that go in over the summer either need to find it or I need a new one that the school pays for... lol. Sad but true... It was mine afterall.

So yeah, 2-5 days, can't wait :) I ended up going through Musicians Friend like I had mentioned. Before I posted this thread I had an idea of what I wanted, I just wanted some last minute advice pretty much, and trust me, it helped a lot.

I would love to learn to play the guitar, except that I was always too busy with orchestra to learn. That, and I lack cash.

I think electric is easier to play because its smaller than an accoustic...
my brother's tried to get me to learn for a long time, and I found that I like his accoustic better (because of the sound), but his electric is easier to learn on.

//edit
haha you've already got one...
Everyone seems to lose something in band...
