View Full Version : When making a new website layout...
Random_Idiot 07-13-2003, 10:59 PM When making a new website layout what size should you make it? Crap... I'm trying to find the right words to describe my question... Sorry, I'm not very articulate.
For example, when making wall papers, people usually make them 800x600.
I want to try making a website layout/background/whatever... but I am unsure of how big to make the size. Help?

Cherchezlafemme 07-13-2003, 11:12 PM Well do it by the screen resolution you already have! And if you want to edit that resolution go to the "Control Panel" on My computer. Then change the resolution to your preference. ;)
Random_Idiot 07-13-2003, 11:43 PM Thanks for replying... but I meant size as in like pixel size. But now that you mention it... what screen resolution do people normally have their computer set to? Mine is True color 1024x768... whatever the ^^^^ that means... x_X;;...

your screen resolution is 1024x768, which means it is 1024 pixels wide, and 768 pixels long. On my site, most people have their computer set to 800x600.
When I make layouts, I don't make them 800 pixels by 600 pixels, I make them smaller, to allow for things like toolbars and scrollbars, but thats just a personal preferance.
Hope that helps! :-)

alkaline39 07-14-2003, 12:53 AM When making a layout, the width should be 780 pixels or less, that leaves enough room for a scrollbar. If you dont want to have a scrollbar then the maximum size you should go with is 796 pixels wide. That way it will look good in 800x600 without having to scroll over to see the page. But when most people design with tables, they set the width to 100% so that it automatically resizes, when the browser width is changed
Random_Idiot 07-14-2003, 01:29 AM God... I feel so retarded. I'm very new and clueless about making layouts. I've dabbled with making crappy amateur graphics and some html but I've never really made a layout.
Thanks a bunch for the help and putting up with my stupidity! Much obliged...
-REALLY BIG idiot-
PS - what are tables? Oh ^^^^...
Cherchezlafemme 07-14-2003, 01:35 AM You're very welcome!
Next time watch the language! It's censored for a reason ;)
Tables help can be found here:

PS: No, you're not retarded! You're new, we must start somewhere before we get really good with HTML! Much luck with your web layout!!!! :D
Random_Idiot 07-14-2003, 01:44 AM I can't believe Please dont do that - mod are censored... Then again this is for kids right? Fuhgeezus... I feel 1 inch big. People younger than me are helping me (probably)...
I know what those tables are. Are those the same tables Alkaline39 was talking about? I'm thinking not because I'm pretty sure I've heard references to the 'tables' he's talking about. Design tables? *shrugs*
Perhaps I should start a new thread...

MaGiCSuN 07-14-2003, 02:22 PM also don't ask in several threads what tables are. One thread is more then enough
sizes for 800x600 = 780 pixels width
sizes for 1024x768 = 1003 pixels width

Dude128 07-14-2003, 07:18 PM just so you know, the actual amount of space can vary- the width of the scrollbar is customizable, so it may be wider, leaving you with a smaller available width. and some browsers like Netscape, for example, have a bar along the left side that controls the sidebar.
MaGiCSuN 07-14-2003, 07:34 PM sizes for 800x600 = 780 pixels width
sizes for 1024x768 = 1003 pixels width
these sizes is when having the normal sizes scrollbars. ;)
