how do I compress my files to save as much space as possible?

for example, I have a BUNCH of video clips. Lets take this one clip for example, named "all the best.wmv". This clip is 5413 KB and when I right clicked > "send to compressed folder", I got "all the best.zip" and it was 5319 kb. That's like, almost the same as the wmv! I thought the meaning of compressing files was to save space etc, but this doesn't help much. Am I compressing them/zipping them the wrong way or what? What can I do to make em smaller?

music files and video files like MP3, WMV, WMA are normally compressed as it is. So trying to compress them even more normally won't work, especially ive you are just using winzip. It's compression is a bit shoddy.

Is there any other program?

I know of WinRar (http://rarlabs.com/rar_archiver.htm), they have their own compression format which is supposed to be superior to zip.

I myself use 7-zip (http://7-zip.org/) it is a freeware program with it's own compression format as well. I've used it for the past 2-3 yrs and have had little difficulty with it.

I prefer winrar and 7-zip myself too.

You could also re-encode your videos. That is change the quality of the video and sound. Often you can lower both without any problems and cut the file size in half, if not more. There are tons of tools around that do this, and it really depends on what codec you use. So you could try a few different codecs while your at it. Searching google and alike should help you out a lot. ;)
