View Full Version : mp3 downloads....
cute_angel10490 07-10-2003, 01:21 PM ok, I downloaded some songs from this site: [removed]
is it illegal to put the songs I downloaded from there to my site?
Note from moderator:
I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone that visited the link in this post run a virus scanner as soon as possible, or get one if necessary (try searching for AVG on Google- it's free). When I clicked the link, I got a warning from AVG about a Trojan-type virus, and when I returned to Windows from that warning after clicking Heal, the save dialog was open in Netscape. I do not know if it could have done any harm without a virus scanner, but it's better to be safe than sorry :)

bellportal 07-10-2003, 01:30 PM It depends. If the songs belong to you, then you can do what you like. If they don't belong to you then you can:
a) Ask the owner of the MP3's if you can upload them to your site
or
b) Link directly to page on the MP3 download site where you click on a link to open the music (DO NOT DIRECTLY LINK TO THE MUSIC) and give full credit to the owners.
HTH,
MaGiCSuN 07-10-2003, 07:15 PM if i downloaded the .mp3 then i'm the owner then, becuase someone has downloaded it from me after that. But that doens't mean you can put it up for free. Unless someone made the song itself, like recorder their own voice with it, made their own music, then you can put it online with permission. other then that, nope, because that person is not the owner, the artist that made it is.

cute_angel10490 07-11-2003, 02:50 AM so...I can't put it on my site?
I just want the song to be a background music not for people to download it
MaGiCSuN 07-11-2003, 07:12 PM if everybody would say that then downloading mp3 music wouldn't be illegal anymore ;)
using a song from someone else on your own site is just against the rules of the 'music world' i'm sorry.

not just the "music" world but you run into problems real fast revolving around copyright laws
MaGiCSuN 07-11-2003, 10:59 PM  that's why i had put them between 'music world' ..... because i meant the WHOLE thing...
cute_angel10490 07-12-2003, 01:10 AM so there's no sites that you can download .mp3 and upload it to your site?
lefty 07-12-2003, 01:36 AM No matter where you get them from, it'll still be illegal!
Dude128 07-12-2003, 02:33 AM well, not exactly- you can download/upload/do whatever you want with an .mp3 file- as long as you are the copyright holder, or you have express permission from the copyright holder. but most commercial artists and things- forget about it. they're out to make money.
lefty 07-12-2003, 05:07 AM right, that's what I meant. :P
seriously, though, we just seem to be asking/answering the same question over & over again.
bellportal 07-12-2003, 08:18 AM There may be some sites that allow you to download mp3's and do what you want with them... but it is very unlikely.
Try what my signature says - ASK the owner of the site if you can do this sort of thing with the mp3's you download.
HTH,
cute_angel10490 07-12-2003, 11:15 AM what if I link the music to my site from where I downloaded it instead of uploading it, like what my friend did at his site?

MaGiCSuN 07-12-2003, 11:28 PM that would still be using it, and you are also hotlinking it too so you are also using bandwidth from them too.
after all: nope it's not allowed. UNLESS you are the one that made the whole thing (like people sing a song, save it as .wav and convert it to .mp3)
if someone from the mods feel free to close this thread they have my vote, since this question has allready been answered many times
