View Full Version : I got a question....
rainbow_monkey 04-29-2006, 07:10 AM First of all, sorry for all of the threads lately. :o
Anyways, I was just looking at Lauren's site and I kinda decidided that I want to start making sites again. :) I want one of my own to work on and stuff.
I know I visit LEIA alot and I am around HTML, PHP, CSS, and stuff like that, but actually, I never really picked up on it, I'm no good at it really. :(
So I want to make a site really bad now, :rolleyes: but I don't know what I need to start with. :blush:
I feel so dumb that I can't do it by myself because I mean, Lissa taught herself HTML, PHP, CSS, I can barely do HTML myself. :(
Oh well, I was just wondering, do you think I should make a site? I would be asking alot of question.
I'm not sure if I will be able to pick up on it if I do. :o Maybe....well, not very quickly I know that. :hehe:
Okay, that's all, I'm truly done now. :D
onigiri 04-29-2006, 07:24 AM I say go for it! Even if you're not too good at HTML now, you'll improve if you keep working on it. Everybody had to start out somewhere, right? Nobody starts out as an HTML expert. And if you have a lot of questions, well, that's what this forum is for, isn't it?
rainbow_monkey 04-29-2006, 07:30 AM Yeah, I guess so. :) :P
tokyo bleu 04-29-2006, 08:46 AM If you are a member of Neopets, Xanga, or even MySpace, the best way to venture into coding is customising whatever (profile, blog page, user lookup, etc.). I ventured into the coding world via Neopets years ago and progressed a lot.
At first I used Frontpage and Dreamweaver, then had a look at the code. It taught me lots. Lissa also says on her site that she looked at page source. It's an easy way to learn HTML and CSS, plus touching up on Javascript and VBscript too. I also recommend taking a peek at http://www.php.net for PHP tutorials.
allie 04-29-2006, 01:36 PM Go for it! There are lots of people here who can help out :D
Patrick 04-29-2006, 02:36 PM There are lots of tutorials as Thomas said. Google (http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=HTML+Tutorial&btnG=Google+Search) is your friend. :D
If you get stuck just post in the forum. :)
AiJahya 04-29-2006, 04:59 PM Go for it! I didn't know anything about HTML, and then I found LEIA. :D I'm still not the best there is, but I can code HTML and CSS, with a liiiittle bit of PHP. Coding your own website is a lot of fun once you learn how! :)
Marta 04-29-2006, 05:18 PM Making a website is the best way to learn! I think you should go for it! Having your own website would be cool, and if you get stuck, we're all here to help :D
Douglas 04-29-2006, 05:37 PM Well, you should learn them in a specific order to help, like don't learn PHP and then learn HTML, learn HTML first, then JavaScript, then move on like so :D
J to the izzosh 04-29-2006, 05:57 PM Dooooooooooooooit!
rainbow_monkey 04-29-2006, 07:03 PM Thanks you guys. :blush:
I already know quite a bit of HTML, a little CSS. Absolutley [sp?] no PHP and that's want I learn, PHP. :D
Edit: Oh and I'll take a look at that site, Thomas....thanks. ;)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 04:26 AM Sorry for my stupid double post:
I know this is pathetic drawing it out, but I just wanted to know what you think. :)

I'm just like you, I don't know any HTML. :P I just post here for fun. I do want to learn but maybe some other time. Anyway, I like your layout, it's very green. I think you should add a tab more color. Maybe a few, that would be nice.
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 06:48 AM I'm just like you, I don't know any HTML. :P I just post here for fun. I do want to learn but maybe some other time. Anyway, I like your layout, it's very green. I think you should add a tab more color. Maybe a few, that would be nice.
I just wish I new how to make that on the web now. :lol:
I will mess with some colors and see what I like. It does need some color though, I just wasn't sure of what. :)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 07:15 AM Double post again:
Do you think it looks better with the black text or the green text?
Black text (http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f342/rainbow_monkey/?action=view¤t=yeah-right--heheh.gif)
Green text (http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f342/rainbow_monkey/?action=view¤t=iwishhh.gif)
Double post again:

Black text (http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f342/rainbow_monkey/?action=view¤t=yeah-right--heheh.gif)
Green text (http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f342/rainbow_monkey/?action=view¤t=iwishhh.gif)
The green works ;)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 05:29 PM The green works ;)
Thank you. :blush:
I don't even know if I will be abel to do this though. :confusion
I have looked at some source codes too. I am doing this at the moment. :hehe:
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 05:38 PM I think it's *much* better with the black text...it gives me less of a headache, which means that I would stay at your site longer ;)
I would read up on learning tables to make that layout. It'll be pretty simple to code ;)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 05:42 PM I think it's *much* better with the black text...it gives me less of a headache, which means that I would stay at your site longer ;)
I would read up on learning tables to make that layout. It'll be pretty simple to code ;)
Thank you so much! I was wondering if it was tables or what not. I'll go look at that forum now. ;) :P
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 05:45 PM Haha, cool :) If you get stuck, just let me know.
I've been doing HTML for around 8 years now, but I didn't get a good grasp of tables until fairly recently. Learning about tables thoroughly will definitely help you in the long run ;) That includes rowspan/colspan! For some reason I could never figure those out :hehe: I now make sure my web design students know all about those in their first month of classes.
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 05:49 PM Well, I know I will need lots of help and I will be asking way too many questions. :hehe:
Hopefully I will get to know about tabels somewhere in the begining sometime. :)
Marta 05-01-2006, 05:59 PM Questions are just fine ;)
As for tables, I think Lissa's page about tables is helpful, so be sure to look at that if you haven't already.
And I totally agree with Elizabeth, use the black text!
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 06:01 PM Yep....Lissa has a great tables tutorial. I've used it many-a-time, and I refer my students to it, for reference while they're completing their homework.
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 06:09 PM I have another question. [imagine that!]
I was trying to mess with the table code from Lissa's main site on "Word Pad" but it didn't work. It that wrong? So should I use the actual internet like geocities or something? :confusion
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 06:25 PM Actually, I was in favor of geocities, until my student (haha) suggested I use freewebs.com. It does seem superior, as they don't have any ads. I'd use them.
As for word pad not working, I've never tried it. I always use Notepad. I would try using that instead :)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 06:31 PM Okay. Well, I already use geocities kinda, so I will just do that. I don't mind the ads. [as long as it's free...i don't got mone] :lol:
I am just using an old account to mess with codes. Do you think I should make a new account for my site? :confusion [i'm really excited about learning new stuff!] :blush:
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 06:33 PM Nah, the old site works just as well ;)
Be sure to show us your progress!
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 06:38 PM Okay! :D I'm working on it right now. :hehe: :blush: :)
Thanks to all of you! ;)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 06:53 PM I'm double posting alot:
look? (http://www.geocities.com/giggly_googly_monkeys//tables.html)
I don't know how to make it bigger besides to type more in. :confusion
Anyways. what do you think? :)
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 07:01 PM It's looking good! Looks like you're picking it all up quickly ;)
--- To change the width or height of a table without having to add more text, put this tag in your <td> :
width=X or height=X
X being the amount of pixels you want the width or height to be equal to.
--- I don't know if you want to know this, but it's something I wanted to learn for a while but couldn't figure out. If you want the text on both sides of the table to be right at the top, put this code in your <tr> tag: vAlign=top
--- Also...I was just looking at your code. If you want to center something (in your case, the table) you can just type <center> rather than the whole <div> thing ;) It's a bit simpler, and it works the same way.
Great job so far!!
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 07:04 PM Thanks. Do you see anything wrong on my code? I wasn't sure. ;)
I just did the gray background thing. [i wasn't sure if you saw that part yet....]
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 07:08 PM Ooo...I like the gray background! It definitely adds more interest...
Unfortunately, it looks like your page got a bit lopsided in the process ;)
I just checked, and it's because you didn't have a <td> in front of "stats" and your other stuff. Just stick it in there and see if that fixes the problem.
It's looking good ;)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 07:14 PM I was just about to ask you what I did wrong. :hehe: Thanks. ;)
Better?
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 07:16 PM Mucho better! :) Now, if you'll excuse me...I have to get off the internet for a bit while I teach a "real life" student ;)
Oh, and good job on fixing the <td><Tr> thing...I noticed in your code that you had gotten it a bit mixed up, but then you fixed it. Figuring out what little things went wrong is very important in coding :hehe:
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 07:17 PM Okie dokie!
Thank you so much though! :D
I could help you even more ;)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 07:33 PM ^^ Good, because I got questions!
How do I put my banner//picture thing right above the tables?
Im the same as you! im around this stuff all the time, but I never picked it up very good
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 07:50 PM OK...my student just left ;)
If you want the image right about the tables, just put the image code:
<img src="IMAGE.GIF"> right above your table code, with the "break" tag right after it: <br>
So, the beginning of your code will look like this:
<center>
<img src="IMAGE.GIF"><br>
<table ...
etc :)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 08:03 PM Yaaay! Thanks! :)
Now..... uh oh! :scared:
No. um....in my picture (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f342/rainbow_monkey/yeah-right--heheh.gif) I have a darker green behind the bold words on the right. How do I do that?
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 08:43 PM You could just add another table where you have the words, for example...
<table border=0 bgcolor="COLOR"><tr><td width=100%>TEXT HERE</td></tr></table>
Just put that wherever you want the background color to change :)
I know there's a way to do it with div layers....but I can't remember it right now :blush:
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 08:45 PM That's alright. I'll try this. :P
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 08:51 PM Oh, I just noticed something in your code...you don't need to put "or" in between the width and height tags in your code :) I just put that in to say you could put either one (or both, really).
Patrick 05-01-2006, 08:54 PM I've never actually made a layout or anything yet. :P
I'm attempting to now. :)
So far... this. (http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j127/pbeane/potientallayout.png)
I know a lot of HTML. I've never learned tables though.
[red and green are my favorite colors ;)]
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 08:55 PM Oh, I just noticed something in your code...you don't need to put "or" in between the width and height tags in your code :) I just put that in to say you could put either one (or both, really).
Oh yeah, hahah! :hehe: I'll doo that.
I tried th extra table thing, but I think I will just search through some threads to find the little background thing. :)
You are helping me so much! Thanks! :D
I've never actually made a layout or anything yet. :P
I'm attempting to now. :)
Are you realizing how easy it can be? [i am!]
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 08:59 PM I tried th extra table thing, but I think I will just search through some threads to find the little background thing. :)
The little background thing?
Patrick - that's looking great so far! I like the simplicity of the "PLB" on the side...the white against that pinkish/redish color looks very sleek ;)
Patrick 05-01-2006, 09:00 PM Are you realizing how easy it can be? [i am!]
Yup :)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 09:02 PM The little background thing?
Yup. :) The darker green behing "Stats" and "Shoutbox" and "Navagation".
Oh, sheesh, I didn't even see your link. :rolleyes: That looks awesome, Patrick! ;)
Patrick 05-01-2006, 09:05 PM Thanks, yours looks great, too!! I understand how to make a table, but I don't know where to put my height or width tags. :(
900th post. :)
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 09:10 PM Mine is just......
<table border="1">
<td width=X height=X>
Text and stuff
Text and stuff</tr></td>
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 09:12 PM Put the width and height tags inside your <td> tag. For example:
<table>
<tr>
<td width=500 height=600> Text! </td>
</tr>
</table>
You can do that for each <td> tag :)
<edit> Haha...you beat me to it, Rainbow ;) </edit>
Patrick 05-01-2006, 09:16 PM OK... thanks soo much!
One more question... how do I find the height and width of the area I want to use a table in?
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 09:16 PM <edit> Haha...you beat me to it, Rainbow ;) </edit>
Oh, sorry. :o
Edit:
OK... thanks soo much!
One more question... how do I find the height and width of the area I want to use a table in?
hhhmmm....I just go in the regular paint program and use the "Select" tool to crop the area and at the bottom right corner it says like 567x123.
There is an easier way I suppose. :hehe:
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 09:21 PM OK... thanks soo much!
One more question... how do I find the height and width of the area I want to use a table in?
Well, you can guess...each number is a pixel, which of course are each of the little "dots" across a screen. So..."200" would be 200 pixels across the screen.
If you right click on an image and click "properties," that will tell you what the width of the image is in pixels :)
Oh, sorry.
Haha...no problemo ;)
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 09:22 PM hhhmmm....I just go in the regular paint program and use the "Select" tool to crop the area and at the bottom right corner it says like 567x123.
There is an easier way I suppose. :hehe:
That's a great way to find the width and height!
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 09:23 PM Sheesh, your way is at least eaiser to explain. :lol:
Patrick 05-01-2006, 09:33 PM Thanks!! I'm working on a style sheet and a layout now. :D
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 09:36 PM ^^ Cool! Could you show us when you can? I wanna see it. :hehe:
Patrick 05-01-2006, 09:40 PM This is my style-sheet:

and I'm still working on my tables and layout. :)
Is this a correct table?:
<table>
<tr>
<td top=222 left=444 width=500 height=600> Text! </td>
</tr>
</table>
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 09:44 PM The table code is correct, except only div layers use "top=" and "left=." Unfortunately, those will have to come out of a table code :)
Other than that - good job! :D
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 09:46 PM ^^ I think that's right. I don.t think you need "top=222 left=444" though. :confusion
Edit: hahah, lol! Now you beat me to it, shanti. :)
Patrick 05-01-2006, 09:55 PM Hmm, ok. Should I use a div code then to get it adjusted to the top/left? :P
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 10:00 PM ^^ hm, I wouldn't know that one. Maybe shanti will. :o
Do you think I should make a new account for my actual site? Like for when it's done and stuff.
Patrick 05-01-2006, 10:10 PM A new account on LEIA?
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 10:12 PM No....on geocities. :)
dolce shanti 05-01-2006, 10:22 PM Hmm, ok. Should I use a div code then to get it adjusted to the top/left? :P
It will automatically show up on the top left of the screen. :)
Rainbow - You don't have to change your account, unless you want a new link name :stickout:
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 10:24 PM Rainbow - You don't have to change your account, unless you want a new link name :stickout:
Well, yeah, I kinda want a new name. Giggly Googly Monkeys was for me and my 2 friends.
I was just going to do rainbow_monkey. I that kind a boring?
How I find the width of an image is use paint, then select Image > Attribrites.
rainbow_monkey 05-01-2006, 11:13 PM I guess I'll just make an account with geocities.
I think "rainbow_monkey" will work fine. :)
Edit: That was taken, so it's going to be "rainbow.monkey"! :D
Good luck with it! Post a link to it in your profile :D
rainbow_monkey 05-02-2006, 05:28 AM ^^ Okay. I am just switching everything over to my new account right now. ;)
rainbow.monkey (http://www.geocities.com/rainbow.monkey/)
^^ Look, it's there now!
dolce shanti 05-02-2006, 06:13 PM It's looking good!
