View Full Version : College Scholarship Suggestions?
AiJahya 04-13-2006, 08:35 PM Hey guys,
I graduate next month and will be going off to college. :scared: School for me is about $24,000 per year, and I've gotten enough scholarships and money to pay for all but about $2000. I've been applying for outside scholarships on FastWeb and a couple of other scholarship sites, but haven't had much luck with that. Does anyone else have ANY suggestions? :confusion It's so frustrating to be so close yet so far away... I can't afford to take loans out and pay them off after college. :( So, any help or advice y'all might have will be greatly appreciated! :D
(I use the :D a lot, don't I?)
Katja 04-13-2006, 09:45 PM Sorry I can't really help you, seeing as I've got another three years before I'm in that predicament... Good luck, though :)
Owlie42 04-14-2006, 12:30 AM Is there anything that you can apply for locally? I know in my city there are a number...
Lissa 04-14-2006, 12:46 AM You can always try fastweb.com :)
J to the izzosh 04-14-2006, 01:14 AM Duck tape, to the rescue! (http://www.ducktapeclub.com/contests/prom)
On a side note, a $24,000 yearly tuition is insanely insane!
AiJahya 04-14-2006, 01:34 AM Well, I've signed up for Fastweb... I think I signed up in December, and I have applied for a number of scholarships through them, but so far I haven't had any luck. :(
I've applied for some local ones, and did manage to win one, $450 scholarship, but when your tuition is $24,000....yeah....
$24,000 tuition/room and board for a private school isn't that bad. Some schools charge $35,000. Heh.
Is there a trick to writing the essays or is there anything that you should definitely put on your resumes?
allie 04-14-2006, 01:44 PM You could always get a part-time job :)
There is a way where you could get loads of money, rob a bank. Though the downside is you get caught etc.
AiJahya 04-15-2006, 01:59 AM I have a part time job and I worked 28 hours a week last summer, and then I've worked 16 hours a week during the school year for...well, a year now. :D I'll have saved about $3800 by the time I go to college...
Hehe... I guess I coooould rob a bank, but the downside to that is being a felon and never getting into college. ;)
pubicusqualitas 04-15-2006, 02:02 AM I definatly recommend CollegeBoard.org (or .com O_o).
I've already started applying for scholarships and I'm on my sophomore year, but I'll have 200k$ in tution by the time I get my law, business, photography, and fashion degrees. .-.
Good luck on your hunt, by the way.
AiJahya 04-15-2006, 02:06 AM Yeeeiiiikes... How LONG is all that going to take?
bejayel 04-15-2006, 03:24 AM I've had to rely on student loans. GO $30,000 debt.
In the end though, its all worth it. I would regret it if i never went back to school i think.
As for scholarships. I just got a mail about some millenium scholarship. I am sure ther eare a umber of websties out there. Also a bunch of fast food places are scholarships that everyone can apply to as well. Also, if you are in finalcial need, burseries are a good option too.

It shouldn't take any longer than 9 years. But three of those years will be spent in London at the Royal College of Arts persuing my fashion and photography degrees.
Angelica 04-15-2006, 04:45 AM What do your parents do for a living? I know in the occupation that my dad's in, they give a couple of thousand dollars for essays. Maybe you could check with your mom or dad's employers. (Sometimes even grandparents can help you get money.)
Owlie42 04-15-2006, 05:25 AM Some companies give scholarships.
$24,000 a year isn't that bad. One school I looked at, I don't remember the tuition, but in total (housing, activity fees, etc), costs about $45,000 a year. THAT is insane.
The master 04-15-2006, 04:08 PM $24,000 a year for school?? Wow, that is a lot of money. I am currently at college and i pay $6,200 a year ($3,100 a semester). Where are you going to? Harvard? :O :P

That's actually not bad for a private school. A lot of them cost on the order of $40,000+ a year. (Believe me--I've been looking through various aid packages recently...) And it's not just Harvard and the other Ivies, but it's usually the small liberal arts colleges because I *think* Harvard and that ilk get a good deal of grant money for research so they can divert money to other things...
AiJahya 04-15-2006, 11:32 PM ^ What Owlie said.
I've looked into some colleges that were small, private colleges that were more than $35,000 per year. It's...insane.
My dad's a college professor at a small college here...where...I hate to say it, but most of the profs don't know what they're doing. Even my dad will admit to such. There's a deal where if we stay here, I get a 90% tuition discount at any school in the system...but it looks like we're going to move this summer. :(
amusic20 04-16-2006, 02:22 AM My college, Denison University, is about $37,000/year (probably going up next year), and I only have a $10,000 scholarship -- $27,000's still a lot lol, but my family wouldn't qualify for financial aid...anyway, if you're looking for scholarships I'd definitely recommend fastweb.com, and also just try doing searches on Ask Jeeves or Google. And you may see ads in magazines, newspapers, etc. If you're looking to pay off the rest of the tuition, check to see if your school has a work-study program. $2000's not bad at all -- I wish that was all I had to pay!!

I applied there! They actually gave me about 14,000 a year--not a whole lot, but better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick. One of the other colleges I'm looking at is giving me more, but the GPA requirement is higher...:grouch:
AiJahya 04-20-2006, 06:10 PM ^ That does not sound like fun... What's the minimum GPA you have to maintain in order to keep your scholarships there?
Owlie42 04-20-2006, 11:08 PM ^3.0 at a university that mainly caters to insanely smart engineering students.
AiJahya 04-23-2006, 03:21 AM That doesn't sound like fun... I know that to keep my scholarships I have to keep at least a 3.2...which, shouldn't be *too* terribly hard unless I end up with a weird course load some semester.
