Hello all.

I'm a year 11 student and I'm doing a a research project on why people own guns. So I thought I'd come here and ask for your opinions on why you own a gun, or why others you may know own a gun.
It would be appreciated to go into a little bit of depth, not just saying "For safety" or something like that, maybe how you think it will protect you, what the threats are etc.. Or whydo you love guns? What is it aboutt he gun that you love about? the power? satisfaction, the look?
Also please tell me your asl (age, sex, location) so I know where the opinion is coming from.

I just want to get as many opinions as I can from a wide range of places.

Thanx in advance,
Liwymi

Gun ownership has always been a big topic here in the U.S.

I'm only 16 years old, and my family does not own any guns or do I know anyone close that does/appear to, I can say that I'm fine with gun ownership existing in private homes.

I will assume that you already know the U.S. has the highest amount of households owning handguns.

Unfortunately, there are many areas in the U.S. where your average neighborhood is gang/crime-ridden and it's potientally dangerous to just reside there. Honestly, if I were a low-income citizen residing in a shady, but affordable area and I owned a gun, I would probably feel a lot safer about my home.

However, on the other side, private possession of firearms have been the source of many problems... and are seemingly causing more trouble than the benefits of protection. From this statistics Web site (http://www.justfacts.com/gun_control.htm):
-- About 6,000 children were caught with guns at school in 1997 and 1998.

As you can see, the horrors of gun ownership causes a lot of turmoil not only in private residences, but in the political world as well. Republicans are more pro-gun ownership than Democrats are.

Regardless of all the unfortunate incidents, I do not see how gun ownership would really affect my life drastically as I am in no situation related to firearms, so I can't really be opposed to it.

(P.S. I should be doing my chemistry homework.)

I do not have any guns, but living in the city I do need protection so I carry a bottle of some strong pepperspray for protection. I know some next door neighbors who own a couple of old fashion guns, they do work, I've seen them carry them around, I asked what they were going to do with them and they said they were going to go hunting... That's all I know, personally, I would never want to own a gun, I've never even used one before for hunting or something like that. But I don't have anything against people owning them.

My family owns around 14 guns, which we use for hunting and shooting sports. I own 2 of those 14 guns :) We didn't really have any guns until a few years ago, when my dad became interested in hunting.

He always says - gun control is holding a gun with two hands.

We have 2 rifles that my dad got from my mom's dad. [I think :confusion]
I don't think we have ever used them though.

I am not opposed to gun ownership, because there are benefits to owning a gun, like protection and a sense of security, but I personally would never want to buy one, because I have this strange fear that I might accidentally shoot someone. :P

I'm exactly the same, I've never even touched a gun, and I don't want to.

If you want my a/s/ for your info, go view my profile. My location is the United States, and we'll leave it at that.

Well, no one in my family owns a gun, and I refuse to touch them. I had an opportunity to learn how to use one, but I refused. I hate guns. They never do anyone any good. Since when does causing death or injury do anyone any good? Protection, sure okay, but half the time a gun like that is rarely ever used.

Stun guns like the police(or at least the ones we have in the US) have are good though. No one gets hurt.

Okay, that's my thoughts.
