View Full Version : Do You Know a Good *Free* Host?
EmilyStar 07-07-2003, 12:26 AM I'm looking for a *free* host that gives you at least 50MB storage, but more importantly, is really easy to use.
Do you have any suggestions, or hosts that you don't recommend? If so, *please*
tell me about them, thanks!!
burningstars 07-07-2003, 01:23 AM I use hostultra (http://www.hostultra.com) they say they give you unlimited space but its not really unlimited im sure however you do get alot of space on it! Its pretty easy to use it comes with tools to help you make your pages if your still just learning html also.
Or search on freewebspace.net (http://www.freewebspace.net/)
Equus 07-07-2003, 01:34 PM O.O how funny! I came to tell this person about hostultra.com and that I found it on freewebspace.net !!! lol. Well here is another A+++ rating for hostultra. my only problem is I dont like the URL, but you might... Never can tell... :)

I dont' see how your URL is any better
Yours is geocities.com/username
Theirs is hostultra.com/~username
Not too much difference to me.
I agree burningstars, I use hostultra for my clan Web site, it's pretty cool.
EmilyStar 07-07-2003, 06:16 PM thanx u guys. lol. i think i need to read over more carefully LOL!!! its still waaay too complicated . . . has anyone ever tried:
bravenet
angelfire
fateback
dotesay
etc. etc. etc??
what do u think of them?
Tsuki Usagi 07-07-2003, 07:27 PM I have used
geocities.com = its ok if you can stand the little banners and no ftp
dreamwater.com = they were annoying wouldn't recomend that one.
brinkster.com = is good doesn't allow ssi or external css though
fateback.com = no clue as I just started using it.
bravepages.com = is ok but has banners
EmilyStar 07-07-2003, 07:37 PM Do you guys know of one that *doesnt* have banner ads? Pop-ups are ok, but my site is going to use frames, so I don't think I can have banners.
lefty 07-07-2003, 08:52 PM Angelfire has pop-up ads, but they do tend to get annoying.

www.brinkster.com
or try www.pick-me.net
Tina555 07-07-2003, 10:11 PM do you really need 50 mb because that's quite alot. try http://www.9cy.com/ it lets you choose between a pop-up or banner.
J E P P O 07-07-2003, 10:41 PM all i no is Brinksters Free plan gives you 30mb from there u can upgrade right up to 700mb, it costs of course
Superstar 07-08-2003, 05:39 AM i have been on angelfire and its really hard plus they have really annoying pop-ups. geocities has a small pop-up on the corner.
Equus 07-08-2003, 04:40 PM www.hostultra.com is great. no popups or banners. At least none for me. And I dont like my geocities url. Thats a way old site. lol.
megula 07-09-2003, 03:55 AM It's funny how everybody likes the same hosts :). But, I will have to agree and disagree. I really do like hostultra. I have used free, and non-free accounts before. I use geocities now though, because I find it works better for me. It definitley depends on what YOU like, not us. I know that your topic was specific, but I am saying this, just so you are more happy ;).
But, then again, I do like ultrahost...........................
LesPaul59 07-09-2003, 03:37 PM if you want 50mb, try www.50megs.com i dont know if they have banners or not...
twix2006 07-10-2003, 04:29 PM if ur like me who hates pop up ads or ads on my pages then use brinkster...i found it on a site where they had a bunch of free website hosts listed..you get 50 mb [i think..kinda forgot..but its a lot lol]..and its pretty easy to use...only it dun have ftp so u won't b able to use bloggers..or certain bloggers at least. um..its easy to upload images..has that browse button..so yea..u'll have to use all html tho..but i think u probably kno that already :P..so check it out...www.brinkster.com
Katfish 07-10-2003, 10:36 PM don't use tripod or angelfire...everytime u go on a new page there are popups. LOTS. I use geocities, its ok. If u don't want to use alot of html then use geocities ok. but if you are looking for a really cool looking site than i suggest this is no the best choice.
Superstar 07-10-2003, 11:08 PM i use geocities too! tripod and angelfire r confusing!
Incendio 07-11-2003, 12:35 PM U have this problem too.
How about Anglefire, I have no idea how they are.
But I want a host, with NO pop-ups, that wil acuse problem. So NO popups.
I heard that ppl can use Geocities, Angelfire, and Tripod, but that's the only onces I know.
Does any1 know if they have popups?
Tina555 07-11-2003, 12:58 PM in angelfire and tripod you can choose between a banner or a pop-up. geocities doesn't have pop-ups, but a large banner on the right side that you can minimize. if you want to have a host that banner-free, u should try brinkster (http://www.brinkster.com)
Incendio 07-11-2003, 01:00 PM Well, I think banners are better than opups?!
Brinkster? So, is it free? And how much space do you get ?

It's free.....you get 30MB (http://www.brinkster.com/)
Incendio 07-11-2003, 01:09 PM ohh, only 30 MB? Well, that's certanly not much.
Do you know any other hosts with more than 30 MB?

Try doing a search at:
http://www.freewebspace.net/search/power.shtml
If that link doesn't work, go to there main site at:
http://www.freewebspace.net/
Incendio 07-11-2003, 02:00 PM thank you for the link, I guess I'll have to continue searching...*sigh*
Anywho, alternative:
Brinkster 30 BM
Angelfire ??
Tripod ???
Geocities??
So, any1 know how much space I get on the others?
Edit: I serached on the page you gave me, and found Freewebs.com somehting, anyone knows something about it?
Edit: I couldn't find ANY with more than 100 MB
Sheila 07-11-2003, 02:13 PM If you look at the sites, it tells you how much space you get....
Angelfire - (http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/) - 20 MB
Tripod - (http://www.tripod.lycos.com/) - 20 MB
Geocities - (http://geocities.yahoo.com/) - 15 MB
Incendio 07-11-2003, 02:17 PM Ohh, OK, thasnk you. I'm new with this all, so it's a bit confusing eh.
But thanks again, so i guess it's brinkster that is in the lead with 30 MB....
Tina555 07-11-2003, 03:05 PM first i just gotta say that 30 mb is alot! what is your site gonna be about?
i suggest u go with freewebs.com then since they offer 100 mb.

Naw, 30 MB isn't much, not If I'm going to have pictures up...
Yes, I found it when I searched on that link I got. I'm still thinking. Do they have popups and banners?
Superstar 07-11-2003, 05:53 PM geocities has a small banner on the right but u can always cancel them out coz they have an X.
Please do not advertise people's websites, and please do not suggest ad killers. Thanks! -apples
Incendio 07-11-2003, 06:03 PM Yeah, but I get an "ERROR" thing. You know those ANNOYING things?
Does Brinkster and Freewebs have that?
And the URL, like if I sign up for Geocities, must my URL be something GEOCITIES, and the same question for Freewebz, anyone knows?
Superstar 07-11-2003, 06:12 PM u can always get a subdomain (suburl) and change it. the only 2 i know of are shorturl.com (they let u pick from a long list of url's u might like) n cjb.net.
Incendio 07-11-2003, 06:15 PM And does it cost, I mean, how much do you have to pay for your 'own' URL?
Superstar 07-11-2003, 06:25 PM nothing, they're free! :)
but if u mean u want ur own original url like whatever.com those r the ones u gatta pay for.

Oh, well, how much do I have to pay?
And fro those who doesn't cost, you sai dthey didn't cost, I didn't exactly get it. Does it make you get your own URL, or what? Does it only short your URL?
MaGiCSuN 07-11-2003, 07:08 PM i really don't know if you got any idea of how much 30 Mb is, but i've got a site of not even 2 MB, while i have loads of pictures uploaded from different site's, i store .html files there, i also have got fonts online etc. And that together isn't even 2 MB. really 15 MB is allready more then enough for you believe me. Because on the tiem you even get at 15 MB you are allready a few years further.
Superstar, don't suggest add killers. they are illegal and you know that too (the code that kills them, not the add). if you kill the add AND they find you with it your site will get deleted.
the error is caused by geocites.com itself, it has nothing to with your own coding or whatever.'
no offense really, but i would suggest trying a free host first before buying a real domain (www.whatever.com). having a domain requires a bit more then just knowing a bit of HTML.
Superstar 07-11-2003, 07:36 PM oh, i knew that. it just seemed like she was using a code coz i never saw the banner again.
Incendio 07-11-2003, 07:42 PM Originally posted by MaGiCSuN

Yeah, of course I know. And believe me, it's not enough. We're going to start a BIG site. And it needsa lot of pictures, and they're pretty big actually. Plus that forums takes space.
Wait a minute, what's illegal? Hey, don't suggest anything that's illegal, I don't want my site deleted!
So the *errors*, you only get them if you use Geocities? How about Freewebz.com?
Thanks magicsun :)

the url u sign up for is free! like if ur url is long like geocities.com/yourname/index.html u can sign up for a shorter sub one (sub domain) for free. if u want to register for an original like a .com (whatever.com) u can @ register.com and its like $7 a month. theres also this site i found when browsing that u can register a domain for $8.95 per year or u can also get ur subdomain there for free. the site is v3.com.

bellportal 07-12-2003, 08:23 AM Try:
http://www.boomspeed.com
They are quite good. I don't use them, but a friend does.

Sure I will, I guess I will have to pay then. I don't care, so I'll pay, but it's always cool if I find some host with much space, without paying, but honestly, I can pay. Although, maybe we shuld start with a simply site, and then focus on the big things. I dunno, I'll just have to wait.
Oh, btw, Boomspeed [Please watch the language and use the Edit button within 5 minutes of posting]s
Incendio 07-25-2003, 11:54 AM I found somehting:
http://www.70megs.com/
BUt they don't give you any info, if it's free, if not, what they allow/not allow. anyone know?
starrynites 07-25-2003, 03:40 PM Freewebs and Freewebz are the best. They have this edit thing that's really cool too. It's like a notepad. And you can email them to get more space, which will be a lot. You can upload images too, but only gif and jpg. So I would reccomend that.
Loren 07-25-2003, 05:10 PM I would recomend free servers for a free site because they put ads on every page but if you were going to pay they might be good. If you were going to pay I would say BarronHosting.com
JustxMe 07-25-2003, 05:17 PM I Use angelfire, i like it, it's so esy to use, even thought i didn't try geocities or some other free web hosts, i tried envy or something like that but it wasn't really good- TRy angelfire or another few free web hosts and the one you get used to it use it :)
megula 07-25-2003, 05:47 PM Well, if you would like lots of space and a ftp account, etc. Get hosted from someone with a link. You can surf the, web, lots of sites will give you an application. But watch out! You need to have good HTML.
Incendio 07-25-2003, 08:27 PM Originally posted by starrynites

IS freewebZ and freewebS the same? I think it is.
Notepad? How d'y mean? Because I want to create a site, and I thought about my host....
Thank u.
JustxMe - I do not like angelfire, you get a really long url, and they have the worleds annoying popups.
JustxMe 07-26-2003, 11:06 AM Incendio :
Well i know that it have got a long url, but it's easy to use-
About the annoying popups- they don't really show up to me as annoying anymore- After all i like it!
