I want just plain ordinary backgroud not for a webpage but for a 400 by 293 banner. I tried the other tutorials but they didn't tell me step by step and that's the only way I learn.

What do you mean by a "plain ordinary" background?

I have experience with the newest photoshop edition CS 2 (v. 9).

So if you mean a "plain" background, meaning just one color all the way do:

New file --> enter size file (e.g. 500px width, 120px height) --> choose a color from the left hand side color square (click on it) --> choose the paint bucket tool in your toolbar (under the gradient tool) and click on your file. It will get floodfilled with the color you chose :)

ask again if it wasn't clear.... ;)

Rose! What are you trying to explain? I found question and answer in your post itself. Anyhow Iam replying in confusion,

(1) Select new file.
(2) Enter your sizes 400 by 293 banner. Click okey. You will see required document with reguired sizes on stage. (If you have not set transparent background ).
(3) The "Mode" should be RGB. If you are in gray scale or bitmap mode you can't apply any colors to your document.
(4) Click inside rectangular color square in tool box. The color mixer will popups. Chose color of your choice. When done click okey to close your color mixer.
(5) Press Alt+backspace on keyboard. The color will be applied to your document. If you don't want to press keys simply go to tool box and chose bucket tool and click on your open document. It will be filled with foreground color.

What do you mean by plain color. All colors are plain untill unless it consist of gradients and variations of different shades. No problem you can put your question in another way.

^don't worry about it.

Though I think you simply explained the same thing as I did, only with more "technical" expressions ;)
