According to Opera.com, the opera browser is going free... do you think they did that because FF, NS and IE (sort of) are all free.... ?

Probably not, those browsers have been free for a while...
The site says
Opera's growth, due to tremendous worldwide customer support, has made today's milestone an achievable goal.
That'll do it :P They're probably able to afford it now.

There was a free version, but it had advertisements. You had to pay to get rid of them.

I don't really see the point of paying for Opera anyways... What is so great about it that makes it worth paying for when you could just have Firefox, Netscape, or IE for free?

Uh, Opera actually released their ad-free browser verison ages ago.
