please DON'T advise people about old CPU's all new AMD CPU's have overheat protection so they won't burn since the Athlon XP 1500+. The ones tested were thunderbirds!

AMD for me better price/quality. I have a AMD Turion MT-30 Laptop, a AMD 3500+ workstation (planning to replace it with a X2 4600+ when prices drops). A AMD 1800+ Testserver, VIA Nehemia 800 MHz plaything, a 1300mhz thunderbird (old pc). A 600 MHz celeron. And a p4 2.8 GHz in the datacenter. AMD 64 CPU's are more efficient.

Take a look at the AMD Athlon 64 (Venice) and a Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott). The Venice will use around 30 Watt of energy idle and 60 under full load. The prescott uses 95 Watt under full load. I heard ALOT of people with overheated Prescotts, they just are NOT efficient. Northwoods were oke though. There is even not a guarantee that the newest prescotts will run at max clockspeed when you stress them @ 100% long time because they . AMD 64's can do this without a problem.
Benchmarks:

The only good architecture at the moment is the Pentium M architecture based on the Pentium 3 (Way better then 'netburst' P4). But the AMD Turion 64 is a good competition.

Review of my laptop betwee a Centrino laptop

If we take a look at the server segment: The Opterons are way better then xeons. They also scale a lot better: If you have a dual xeon nyou might have 30% more power for example then one xeon. If you have a dual opteron you have like 60% more power then one opteron. This is that the opteron needs less memory bandwidth then xeons. Memory is THE bottleneck of P4 Xeon.
Also i like the ondie memory controller of the opteron. In most benchmarks the opteron wins.
Benchmark:

If we take a look at the dual cores (smithfield) The Athlon X2 is way more powerfull then the Pentium D. The pentium D is just 2 p4 (prescott) cores glued together. The AMD 64 architecture was developed with multicore in mind. All traffic between two cores of the Pentium D will go through the FSB that is already a bottleneck. In AMD's case there is a crossbar switch that decides whats the fasted way to communicate. so the two cores can communicate right to eachother. Intel even ADMITTED that they feeled the wind of AMD in their back and didn't had time to finish stuff so they actually released a half finished CPU: http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/08/17/dualcore/index.php

Take a look at this review for benchmarks between AMD dual core and Intel Dual core
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=a64x2&page=1

A detailed comparance between both architectures±
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2419

And you see that AMD's architecture is way more efficient

If we talk about fairness i like AMD a lot better:
Intel pushes companies. They say to a company: if you buy more then 15% AMD cpu's we will push the price of our CPU's up or we won't even deliver CPU's to you! is that fair? Take a look at Dell: They sell 98% intel CPU's because they are pushed by intel. If they sell more they won't get the cpu's at that good pricing. Also AMD is stuck with using intels x86 and they agreed that they can't outsource more then 15% of the cpu's. That would be a problem today i think with the new factory (FAB 36 Dresden, germany) reade in a half year. There is just something wrong with the way they do business and they are still investigating.

AMD sues Intel:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/AMD-Intel_Full_Complaint.pdf

And i hope that AMD wins.

Talking about production technologies i like AMD's one better. Its much more flexible then Intel. Here is a article about it: http://tweakers.net/reviews/593/1 (dutch)

My conclusion:
AMD is giving you more bang for your bucks. Its less power consuming and less hot. Its more powerfull (especially in games)then intel. Its protected by overheating like intel. Its doing fair business. So yearh, i would go for AMD at the moment. Intel will make its comeback with the Merom a non-netburst CPU that will be a lot better then the crap they make now. But i'll stick to AMD if i have the choice.

</very long uninteresting story>

there's a reason the term "PresHOT" exists :P

Intel. All the computers in the house are Intel.

AMD. I was surprised when AMD took a stand and sued Intel... interesting move, I hope AMD gets a good outcome.

I prefer AMD. When I built my PC, I put an AMD in it but my laptop is Intel =/

Intel is popular onder the people that don't know ```` about computers.
AMD is more popular under the people that know a little bit more about.

Anything that advertises everywhere is going to seem more popular, because that's what people are exposed to. You don't see advertising for AMD.

The discovery team in the Tour the france and one formula 1 team is sponsored by AMD :). AMD's marketing machine is getting better :)

GO AMD!!! :cheer2:

I've always wanted one..it's always been reputed to be the best. My laptop and recently aquired desktop are AMD.

Awesome! Much better than intel.

intel overhere,i don't have the amd spirit,a long time ago i had a k7350 or whatever and it blew up,hehe, but yeah, that was because i kept playing with it.

my next one will be amd (4800+ or higher) but that's next year.

so far i got my northwood 2.6ht up to 3.35 but she couldn't hold it up for super pi
sheila's celeron 2.53 will be here on friday so let's see if i can get it up to 3.8 on air:)

I was planning to buy a apple in the future over a dew years but i don't want a intel in it ;) Too bad that there won't be big upgrades for the powerbook before they move to intel 2006/2007
