View Full Version : Jobs
Right then, at the end of september I am 16 and I am looking for a part time job (On a Sunday), as I am getting annoyed with my paper round (And I need more money). So have any of you got any ideas? I was thinking about my local Tesco's as it is a 5 min. walk away from me.
luvhartz 08-28-2005, 05:21 PM have you thought about doing something on the web? and setting up like a paypal account and making websites for money? for business? etc
How old do you need to be for a paypal account?
I don't know what type of store Tesco's is but I'm 16 now and I've been looking for a job (anywhere but in the food industry) all summer, and believe me it is a lot of work. Just go and apply anywhere, and everywhere, you can't be picky(i might resort to food if the job im hoping for doesn't work out), especially if its going to be your first major job, also I'm not sure how many places will actually hire you for one day a week, most of the places I've applied at require 3/4 shifts minimum, but that's in Canada. A bit of advice is don't wait until the end of September to start handing out resumes, start a bit earlier because by the time they call you back for an interview it might be a while.
unbeknownst 08-28-2005, 06:58 PM I would enjoy just making layouts for a little money...so if you can make layouts...I'd suggest it...unless you hate making layouts...but I am not sure if age matters for PayPal...I have used it once and it was my mother's account...
Tesco is a very big supermarket in the uk and other places i think
Chris 08-28-2005, 07:32 PM It depends - would you like to work in Tesco's? If they are hiring and the pay is alright for you, then apply.

I want one of my own though. And I dont really like making layouts.
Chris 08-28-2005, 08:23 PM Just as a BTW, you need to be 18 to have a paypal account, I think.

That pretty much eliminates 75% of the jobs available to students with very little experience unfortunatly. I had a few friends that said they won't work in the food industry and they simply didn't find a job that summer lol. I hope you have better luck though. I think the key is to not be picky at all. Your first job is just to gain experience so you can get a better job later :P
thezeppzone 08-29-2005, 09:22 PM I originally said no to restaurants, but yeah, that makes up most of teenager hiring, under 18 that is. I have been looking, and now the places I am going to apply to when I go get the applications are all food businesses in town, 4 of them, where before I said I wouldn't go near a restaraunt of any kind...
luvhartz 08-29-2005, 09:34 PM i looked on paypal.com and all i could find on age requirements were directed at US users, it was 18years but im not sure for the uk.. another option if you cant sign up a parent or guardian then you could consider payment by cheque just make sure it is cleared before you send the codes.

I know, but how i see it, if i go and work somewhere i actually eat at and i see something that grosses me out then I'd never want to eat there again...i'd rather be ignorant about what is in the food i eat/ how its cooked.
I do however want to work at a restaurant, as a waitress, because there you get all this amazing experience with dealing with people and pressure, which will look good on a resume.

My mum wont let me have one so I have got to do it behind her back.
dolce shanti 08-30-2005, 06:14 PM I'm 16, and I recently started teaching my own web page designing classes, which has been a blast! I'm teaching kids 12 and up, and it's going pretty well. I think that a lot of people are interested in this class, because it's so unique, and useful! I'm also offering parent/children classes where they can learn to make family web pages.
I'm charging $10/half hour, which I think it pretty reasonable. The half-hours fly by quickly though - I was teaching a class yesterday, and I looked at the clock and told my student, "we only havec 8 minutes left!" He was like, "WHAT?!"
Hehe...anyways, it's been fun. If you want a job doing something related to web page designing and you like kids, I reccomend teaching classes :-)
Cant stand kids, I have got 2 sisters and 1 brother living with me and I use my spare time to get away from them, so I dont want to be around kids all day.
dolce shanti 08-30-2005, 08:47 PM Well, you can always teach people you own age or adults :-)
Chris 08-30-2005, 10:01 PM My mum wont let me have one so I have got to do it behind her back.Erm....no. You will only need one if you are doing online work, which you don't seem keen to do.
Just get a job in Tesco's and let that be the last of it :)
*Jen* 08-31-2005, 09:05 AM I worked in an office: photocopying, scanning, emailing etc.
lefty 08-31-2005, 02:35 PM I'm still on the job-hunt... although I'm looking for a "real" job and failing horribly
Blakelyn 08-31-2005, 03:28 PM I actually recommend working in a food place for your first job. Its hard work, and it makes you appreciate your check when you get it. I worked in a diner when I turned 16, and although the job wasnt the best, I learned a lot from it. I did everything - cashiering, dishes, cooking, serving. Not all in the same shift, of course. I just think its a good thing for teenagers to experience - when you go to buy something, you think "How many dishes did I have to wash for this shirt?".
