yes, lissa's site is done with a table layout.

images may be used as a background of a table cell (td) then the words or links may be placed within the cell to look like they are on top of the image.

the site you have linked in question uses positioned div areas instead of tables. this also answers the question about placing images in specific spots. css positioning.

i will agree on your self assessment... the coding is needing some improvement. your main starting page has a ton of scripts and mixed up coding.

your images and layout look like a good beginning. be sure to get permission to use any images or information on your site if you are getting them from another site. some of it may have a legal copywrite on it.
