I don't completely understand how to do this... I read the instructions, but I can't seem to get past the '.htaccess.txt' part. It won't let me name it '.htaccess' with the dot in front of it like your supposed to have. My domain is kayla24-7.com. I already made an error.html. In the text file I put ONLY 'ErrorDocument 404 http://www.kayla24-7.com/error.html', and nothing else! PLEASE some one help me how to do this!! THANK YOU!!!

add the codes from the .htaccess file into your notepad file
then click on file > save
then select "all files" in the dropdown menu, and type in FILENAME.htaccess (you must type the whole filename) and replace filename with the name the file must be called.
that should work. If not then upload it and rename it on your server to filename.htaccess
I have these problems too with php (before) then it made .php.txt of it then i renamed them online and that worked fine :)

first, open up notepad. then. type in what you want. then, click file => save. name the file ".htaccess " (with the quotes). that's all

I still don't get it! lol I already did that and named it .htaccess. But I don't understand what you mean 'with the quotes'? I tried to upload the text file to my domain but it won't let me because it has a dot infront of it. And when you said 'put a filename in front' do you mean put the whole entire address.htaccess?
EX: http://www.kayla24-7.com/error.htaccess ? ( I have a feeling I'm horribly wrong! :( )
Please help me again, sorry guys, I know this is annoying and confusing! lol Thanks again!

when people say "with the quotes" they mean just that- when you type in what they tell you to, type it all, including the quotes
since you can't upload anything with a period as the first character, you will have to save it as "htaccess" (with the quotes), then upload it, then rename it to .htaccess once it's uploaded.
also- .htaccess IS the filename. that's all it should be called.

It IS uploaded, and still can't rename it! It says 'invalid filename'. What else can I do?

try using a different FTP program?
other than that, there isn't much you can do other than not use .htaccess :(
