I added all the necerssary HTML to a story I'm posting on a website but when I check to see if it has worked, it does but all the speech marks and apostophes (') have disapeared! Why? and how can I stop this from happening?

I
slid my finger along the opening and broke the seal; it made a strange noise
that reminded me of candles. Slowly I pulled out the letter, there was two
pieces of paper, and a large one folded in three and a note folded in half. I
took the largest piece of thick yellow paper out of its envelope, and read the
letter before passing it to mum. In the same green ink it said:

of Merlin, second class, deputy minister for magic, Minor Mugwump.)

 

Dear

begins on the 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.

Mum
went pale while Nan snatched the ‘parchment’ out of her hands, Lily tried to
read with her but the neutral expression on her face indicated she couldn’t
understand. 

 

As
I slowly fished the second piece of paper out of the envelope, Nan said, “well
forget that, it’s probably a prank. You’re still going to Brightale.”


“I’m not so sure, it looks official to me,” mum readied for a fight.

“We
all decided it’s best for her. I mean ‘School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’?! What
will they teach her?”


“Magic of course,” a young, chubby man appeared in the middle of our living
room. 

 

His
large, booted feet squashed our fluffy, cream carpet. I stared at his messy,
blonde hair and dusty, blue eyes. He wasn’t much bigger than his dad but he
terrified me.

 


“’ello Mr Man,” Will giggled.

It looks like you used MS Word to do that.... don't :P If you're not that comfortable with HTML, even using Frontpage to add formatting is better than Word.
I don't know exactly why those marks are disappearing, but it could have something to do with using Word to format. Also make sure that the font you're using includes those marks. Otherwise, I'd suggest redoing it either with Notepad and HTML, or in Frontpage if you must.

it might be getting hung up on the different quotes compared to the quotes in the tags. try this to see if it gets closer to your desired result...

Those double and single quotes get tricky because they have multiple meanings in HTML. These may help you out:

Replace the character you are trying to make with a code that tells the HTML readers exactly what character you are intending to display.

character......code..........example
[space]........ ........hi there => hi there
..`...............‘.......‘HI’ he said. => `hi' he said.
..'................’.......i’m => i'm
.."................“ ” for left and right double quotes

The code above by pb&j shows up mostly as you want it to, however, there are a few areas where HTML may misread a ' (for example: IE displays I'm as i?m). You can replace the misread symbols with the codes above to display them correctly.
