Okay, I have this little hamster, and he's like, the cutest animal EVER. But he's insane. I've got four scars on my fingers from where he bit me. I gave him a carrot once, and he left it in the corner of his cage and it started to rot, so I put my hand in there to get it out and he actually jumped across his cage and bit me. And when we put him in his little plastic ball to run around, he chases our dogs, and runs into them. It's like he aims for their faces. And he makes this noise like a cross between a pig and an angry cat.

Does anybody know how to teach a hamster to behave? o_O

My hamster was like that, what i did is
put a pair of thick gloves on and feed them (This way if they bite it does not hurt) with you hand. If they do bite your finger or anything blow jently in their face. Then take your gloves off, if he/her keeps on biting you put the gloves on again.

It took my haster about 1 month before i could pick him up without him biting me.

You should also not wake them just to see if you can pick them up (They will get anoyyed)

Hope this has been of some help. If you need anymore help just ask.

Aslo try Hamster Land (http://www.hamsterland.com/) they helped me alot.

i had a hamster like that once
it died :P

and nope it wasn't my fault ... but i could say that i wasn't sad that he died though ...
i've had 4 hamsters, all 3 where gorgeous and lovely hamsters. The fourth one was a b/itch ! he made those sounds like you described .. i couldn't do anything with him/her ..

best way is to put on a real thick glove ... but to be honest i don't think it will get any better really .. it didn't with mine .. no matter what we tried.

Love,
Mirna

This is not to do with hamsters but with rabbits, i was just putting her away and then i got cramp in my arm, nearly droped her but managed not too, she then decided to scratch be to death, i have now got this cut on my arm with is a perfect cross. Hurts a lot though.

Whenever I see the word hamsters I remember Marianne's story about her sister-in-law's hamster

umm we had a hamster once, he was relatively calm- except for some times..I think the glove idea's best :)

Okay, thanks guys. =)

I was actually thinking about trading him in or something. =/ I've noticed that he likes to eat potatoes though, and I'm wondering if I can use that to my advantage.

I used to have two hamsters...we thought they were both boys until once they escaped...a few weeks later we go into the attic and see that they were in fact opposite genders and VERY busy. :P

I'm searching my brain now... AAAAAH, you mean hamster 'Dam' :lolol: They still have it.

b.t.w., I used to have a snake like that, it bit me every time I stuck my hand in her cage. I was relieved when she died a few months ago.

Hamsters are naturally anti-social, especially the larger kinds. I would try the glove thing, or put on gloves and let him run around on your bed. Also, are you sure he's male? If he doesn't have enormous, erm, masculinity (some people have mistaken them for tumors), then he's probably a she.

If there's a next hamster, I would buy a male dwarf/teddy bear hamster, from a breeder who socializes the babies, if possible. (and doesn't say "Like, omg! My hamster had like, a lot of bbs!!1")

And I love that hamster pic!!!! I can't stop laughing!!

I'm thinking about hetting a hamster for my classroom, but the pet lady told me gerbils are much friendlier and don't bite as much. :P It must be true!

Try holding the hamster with gloves, inside the cage so it doesn't run away, and if it doesn't bite, take the gloves off. You need to get the hamster used to your scent, so it's best to keep the gloves off whenever you can.

I gave up training my last hamster (I've had 5, and they all died :S) it was just to crazy and stupid. So i fed and changed it and put it in the ball a few times.

I used to have a hamster....he died about a week ago :(
I would suggest the feeding technique...hamsters are greedy little dudes and if you feed them they might associate you with food and like you :)
Or, you could just take magln's advice and hide :P

Well, the pet store said they only sell males. I guess they could be wrong though, because I don't see 'enormous masculinity'. :lolol:

About hamsters being antisocial, my first hamster was really nice, and my brother's is nice too... I don't know.

I think cats are also supposed to be anti-social, yet our lot can be VERY social at times :)

Hopefully the hamster will calm down a bit when it's older, most of my hamsters were MAD at the start, and then they got used to me.... or i got used to them :p

Yeah, some are nicer than others, but in the wild, hamsters live alone, whereas other small pets like rats, mice, and guinea pigs live in colonies/herds. (Sometimes with hundreds of animals in one)

And, pet stores are nutorious (sp?) for not being exactly well informed about animals. It differs from store to store, but the average pet store (at least for rats, I imagine hamsters are similar) have males in with females (so every female would be pregnant), animals that are visibly sick or even dead, and on my rat forum, one of our most common threads is "The petstore person said it was two boys but one of them just had babies!". But you might have a good petstore, and I could be completely wrong.

Female hamsters are supposed to be tamer than males. Is your hamster male or female?

I have a hamster.. But I think she's kinda lonely So I was thinking about getting her a 'Friend' to play with. So When I went to the pet store to choose one.. almost every single one of them that I ever picked up was always Jumping out of my Hands and running really fast. But My Hamster that I have now is in Perfect Health and she's calm and never ever has Bitten me. And she let's anybody hold her. The only Reason I haven't gotten another Hamster is because I'm afraid I'll get bit. So the Best thing to do is Probably the above posts.

Good Luck!

p.s.
My Hamster is a Short Haired Female.

Unless you have a dwarf hamster, I wouldn't get yours a friend. Syrian hamsters can kill each other, and are usually happier alone.

I think he's a Syrian hamster. I really don't know.

The pet store I got him from usually is pretty good, at least with fish... They do have a few employees that are losers, though. =P

He is getting better though. He hasn't bitten me in a while, at least since we moved about a week ago. He still makes that noise though. =/

Hamsters Hamsters! I don't want a hamster, I Have a bad past with the little rodents. One time I held my friends hamsters (they bite when you pick em up) and the dang little donkey pooped on me fives times in 30 seconds!! So the next day I tried to pick one up, and the thing bit me, and it suprised me, so I jerked my hand way fast out of the cage. It must of favored my finger, cause it held on and flew threw the air and landed in a shoe! *sigh* I get an X on that picture :(

Yeah, small animals are easily terrified, and whenever something's terrified, it poops or pees. (Even humans)
I'm not sure if I'm getting the names right, this is a picture (http://animals.timduru.org/dirlist/hamster/cyoro24-Hamster.jpg) of what I'm calling Syrian hamsters. this is a picture (http://www.petoftheday.com/archive/2004/June/06.jpg) of what I'm calling dwarf hamsters.

About the noise, could it be possible that he has a cold or some other respiratory disease? Does it sound like he's "clogged" up any other times or just when you take him out? Does he ever sneeze or look like he's hiccoughing? Is he on pine or cedar bedding? (I know I'm asking lots of questions, just trying to help)
