'cos the images I create are pretty rubbish... could someone give me some tips?

Tutorials. I would highly go with reading tutorials and following them to get a feel of the entire program and what it can do.

Just Google for them.

^then i think my suggestion would be to download a free trial of PSP or photoshop. Thats a good place to start.
(Im not trying to be snotty, thats just kinda the truth!)

Why should he have to download any other programs when he already has two?

My first images were screwy, but then I found tricks in Paint and I started getting pretty good images from it. Then I heard of GIMP (www.gimp.org, http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html) and started getting images with quality as good as photoshop, sometimes better then! Its free too. happy hunting!

You can get a free 30 day trial for Paint Shop Pro 9 on http://www.jasc.com and I like to use the blind effect and using a border around the words...

well i cant make great images cause i dont have a good paint prgram, but i use microsoft paint and photoimpression (a yucky photoediting software that came with my old camera) and some creativity and i can make some decent ones. just try and use different techniques, something you think would be ugly might turn out really cool!
