I have created a new layout, but it only looks the way I want it to in Mozilla Firefox with a resolution of 1024x768 or above.

Would you say that this is bad (I think it will be) because it limits the number of people who will view it properly.

I need your opinions.
Thanks,
Chris :D

You should make it work cross-browser -- 90% of the world uses IE :)... so try make it work in IE too. Oh and it's best to make it work in 800x600 -- because that is a very common resolution. EDIT: Could you give us the page link... it's not advertising :)(i hope) and shouldn't this be in General?

false. it's about 60% and falling.

but, the point is the same- it should be viewable at least in the major browsers. creating a site that doesn't work in a common browser is a sure way to lose visitors.

when i do layouts i usually make the background 800x600 and then center it or something.. so that it looks okay in any resolution.. or, like for my current layout i made the image to really far to the right.. but instead of doing left: 900px or whatever, i just positioned it from the right.. so if someones resolution was small, they didn't have to scroll really far to see it. that's what i woud do if i were you, so it doesn't annoy people w/ 800x600 resolutions. and when i'm making layouts i first make it look good in mozilla, because thats what i use and thats what most of my visitors use [check your user statistics], and then i check to make sure it looks okay in IE too. :)

800 x 600 is good, but how common is it really?

Pick a resolution that the majority of the audience uses. If you know most if not all of them use 1024 x 768, just design for that. It gives you plenty more space. Besides, how many people really use 15" monitors now? If you have at least a 17" (like most people should because they cost very little) it'll come at a they'll have at least a 1024 res.

False. It's not clear what % use it and all polls and whatnot will tell you something different :P

Chris, does it WORK in IE and smaller resolutions? you just said it doesnt look quite how you want...for me there is a big difference there....my layouts usually look BEST in IE but they still work in firefox etc, just with a few things missing/different.

I think you should make it cross browser compatible too. The only statistics I have to go on are the ones from people who visit my site... While Firefox is in the lead with over 60%, there are still enough people who use my IE to make it worth being browser compatible. Basically, what you should do, is find out what's not working in IE and fix it, or ask one of us to help you fix it =)

I presume that I can show you screenshots, if there is no web address?

Here is what it looks like in MF: clicky (http://photobucket.com/albums/v322/chrisdb89/l_mf.jpg)
Here is what it looks like in IE: clicky (http://photobucket.com/albums/v322/chrisdb89/l_ie.jpg)

As you can see, in IE, the content width is wider than the top and it is a different colour.

I would make it work in all browsers. I just got all finished up making my site work in mozilla and I have to say it was a pain in the butt but I think ti was worth it. I mean, whats the point in working to make anice website if not everyone can see the work youve put into it?

Plus, it made me think that people would probably think i was dumb if my webpage didnt work in their browser, haha.

I doubt it would take you too terribly long to fix it up to work in all browsers, it just took me ages and ages cause i had a major mess up in my coding..but everyone around here was REALLY helpful so if you get stuck theres always someone to help you.

I wish we really knew how many people use firefox these days, ive been wondering. I would guess about 70% still use IE but i guess theres no way to really know...

post some html if you want help with it :P
i seem to have an eye for that kind of things hahaha :P

like starlet says, there's a difference between how you WANT it to look and how it does look in another browser ...
Starlet site might not look the way it does in IE (i have no clue really) but it does work and looks good enough to be viewed and is readable :)
i think that's far more important then the other things ...

I wish people would put some more effort in making it atleast "workable" in FF or safari or whatever .. you have no idea how many site's i see that can't even make a proper stylesheet. In IE this is no biggy, but in safari you don't see any styled text ... very ugly ..
