I use a couple transparent .pngs on my website, and they look fine to me... I checked it with firefox on both mac and PC... but when I view them on IE on my PC, they have a grey background. View here (http://www.quasigeek.net). (The top logo and the category names in the left boxes.) I really don't want to switch to .gif, because no matter what I did the image didn't come out clear. Oh, and I'm using Photoshop CS. Any input? Thanks!

I tried, the same thing happens in Photoshop 7, so it's not that... I heard IE had some .png problems, but I don't know what to do about it. :(

::sigh:: Thanks for letting me know... if that's the case, how can I get a .gif looking not-so-crummy? :P

Just to confirm...transparent pngs in IE = Not fully supported.

I don't think you can, sorry. Gifs support only fully transparent or fully coloured pixels. In your situatuion I would pick the background color of a div and put it where you have transparent pixels and save it as .png then. It would look still the same just without transparency.

try this:
open image in photoshop
be sure it has a transparent background (doh!)
go to file > save for web
select "gif" and then at "preset" (under "done) select "gif 128 no grid" if i translate that right ..
then set the colors to 265 instead of 128 .. that gave me good results...
i'm doing it this way because once i did something with my gif settings, and they turned out all without anti-alias ... that effect. I couldn't get them back without choosing one of the presets and then change the colors back to 265 instead.
So maybe that is what you are having too? with doing above i could get it all back. So instead of having 2 colors (wich i had before) i had multiple colors inbetween ...
Love,
Mirna

Ohh nice! (It was "no dither" instead of "no grid," BTW)
I have the logo looking good, now I just have to work on the others.
Thanks Mirna!

edit: Okay, so now the "category" links don't want to do the same thing... hrm.

Well, if you have PSP9 you can try this:
File > Export > GIF Optimizer
And then play around with the settings to get the best result.
