View Full Version : Earthquake!!!!!!!!!!!
SUPER RP06 06-17-2005, 01:19 AM There was an earthquake this afternoon (Calif. time) in Califronia. It registered a magintude of 4.9 and cenrtred near Yucaipa in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The related earthquake with a 7.0 mangitude earthquake rumbled over the waters 90 miles (144 km) off the northern calif. coast at 7:50 pm PDT (UTC/GMT-7) on 2005.06.14, triggered a tsunami warning, but given an all-clear signal minutes after the tsunami warning was issued.
Did you know that the Asian tsunami on 2004.12.26 caused tens of thousands of deaths. They had no tsunami warning systems.

thezeppzone 06-17-2005, 01:28 AM Yeah, my mom is there on a trip right now, in LA, wow, if I could remember these things. She told me about the one last Sunday that was a 5.6 I believe right after it happened, she didn't say anything about Tuesdays, but today she called, then it happened like 20 minutes later and she called again saying there was yet another one. Quite the first time California experience to be there for 2 weeks, and within 5 days be in 3 earthquakes between 5 and 6 mag.
starlet 06-17-2005, 02:22 AM I hope everyone is ok!
Owlie42 06-17-2005, 03:20 AM I second Starlet.
I wonder if this is related to the one that caused the Asian tsunami. A magnitude 9.3 quake that moves parts of the crust so much would probably trigger a whole bunch of "reaction quakes..." (Wow, that was a waffle-y stream-of-conciousness sentence.)
Valkyrie 06-17-2005, 03:51 AM I was in school during the earthquake. I was just going over notes in math class, when I felt my desk shaking a bit. I thought it was the person behind me shaking it, but then I looked and the person behind me didn't even have their feet on my desk. Then the school announced we had just had an earthquake.
I felt the one on Sunday morning too. I felt my bed shaking and half asleep I thought it was a sign for me to get up and do a big essay I had due the next day. XD
Tsunami warning....I didn't even find out about 'til the next day. >_>;;;;
salomeyasobko 06-17-2005, 04:15 AM i didn't feel it because i was riding down the stairs in my house on a mattress so any shaking just seemed to be from the mattress  i got to the bottom of the stairs and the phone rang and it was my friend. she was like "did you feel it?!??!??!" and i didn't :( but she said it wasn't that bad.. it's kinda weird that we've been having a lot of earthquakes recently.. like 4 in the past week. maybe that means a big one is coming up.. i dunno :| but since i live in southern california and most of them are up north, it's not too bad down here. i think they're kinda fun :P thats probably a terrible thing to say because i'm sure it's not going to be fun when a big one hits.. but its still a bit exciting for me!

lol I want to do that..and, great timing! :P
The only time I could've felt an earthquake I was asleep :/
darckasasin 06-17-2005, 04:02 PM Almost all of my dad's side of the family live in LA (except for a great-uncle who lives in Georgia.) I don't think my dad has heard about it because he's been doing training in the fields for the past 4 days.
sisqoluv 06-17-2005, 10:57 PM Since I'm so used to quakes, I hardly ever feel them. I usually only find out about them when I look at a website (http://www.data.scec.org) that lists recent quakes here. However, I felt this one because I was sitting in my bed. At first, I thought my fat cat had jumped on the bed (it moves when he jumps up there, lol), but as it continued, I thought someone had snuck up behind me and was shaking my bed to get my attention. When I noticed I was alone  I paused the tv and looked around. It lasted for about 15 seconds where I was. I live about 30 miles from a base, so I thought it was from that, but there wasn't any noise to go along with the shaking (and they haven't been doing anything in the like on that base for months now). I quickly turned to the news to see if it was just something small I felt, or if I got the lesser end of something bigger. After it happened, everyone was reporting it as a 5.3.
For quite a while now, it's been said that we've been due for a really big one for years now.
I'm so used to quakes, I usually sleep right through them. One night one almost knocked me out of bed and all I did was grab on the headboard and try to go back to sleep. And then I completely woke up and noticed what was going on.
I'm just glad I haven't read any thing about serious injuries or death.

Fourth quake shakes California
One person injured
Friday, June 17, 2005 Posted: 8:13 AM EDT (12:13 GMT)
EUREKA, California (AP) -- Just hours after a moderate earthquake shook most of Southern California, a strong quake struck off the state's northern coast to become the fourth significant shaker to jolt California this week.
Neither quake Thursday caused serious damage. One person was injured.
A 6.6-magnitude temblor hit about 125 miles off the coast of Eureka around 11:30 p.m., rattling the ocean floor. In the afternoon, a 4.9-magnitude quake struck east of Los Angeles, startling people and knocking items off shelves and desks.
"All of a sudden it just started rocking," said John Napolitano, 45, a campus police officer at Crafton Hills College. "I just sat there and rode it out."
Four significant quakes have hit California this week: A magnitude-5.2 quake shook Riverside County on Sunday, and a magnitude-7.2 quake trembled Tuesday under the ocean 90 miles off Northern California.
Stephanie Hanna, spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey, said Thursday night's quake was likely an aftershock from Tuesday's shaker.
The early afternoon quake was centered near Yucaipa in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About 25 aftershocks followed in a little over an hour, the strongest estimated at magnitude 3.5.
A woman was injured when a light fixture fell on her head in a conference room at Lake Arrowhead Resort, but her injury did not appear to be serious, said a resort employee who declined to be named. She was taken to Mountains Community Hospital but did not want her condition made public, a nursing supervisor said Thursday night.
"I heard a loud rumbling sound, kind of like thunder," said Nick Brandes, 25, manager of a store in Yucaipa. "At the front, all the customers were in a panic. They were all just in a hurry to get out."
Channon Kelly, 31, was eating her lunch in downtown Los Angeles when the quake hit.
"I almost jumped out of my seat," Kelly said. "I'm starting to get freaked out. We've had so many in the last week, the one Sunday and then in Northern California. I could hear the windows rattling and feel it all at the same time."
None of Southern California Edison's 4.6 million customers lost power
DeltaDawn 06-18-2005, 09:39 PM Wow..I hope everyones ok.. (I know, everyone has said that.) I've never felt an earthquake in my life, luckily.
