I was just wondering if you signed up for a host and not finished the site, can people see your site even though it's not done? If yes, is there anyway you could close your site and finish it?

I know it's confusing but I haven't signed up yet so I wanted to know :D

if you have the files online (uploaded from your computer onto the host server) then yes, they are accessable to anyone who has the address to them.

if you want to block access to them, option one would be to keep them offline (only on your computer) until it is done, or option two would be to use a password protection.

basically though, you probably won't get any real visitors until you start spreading your page address (known as your URL) around. so if no-one knows your URL yet, you are pretty safe from visitors for now anyways.

if somepeople do know your URL (like if it is your main site currently but you are revising it) then perhaps do all the new stuff in a new folder online. that way it is like a whole new URL for now and when it is finished, just move all the files into the main folder.

this is usually easy done by two methods.

1. using an FTP program, you may create a new folder, which is really a new directory.

2. using the host's online file manager, you should be able to create a new folder which is really a new directory.

yup.
if you host allows "htaccess" then that is the route you want to go in. do a search in this forum for some ideas on what it is.

if you have a free account, no.
if you have a paid account, possibly but probably not.

You can always put up a "site closed" notice on your index.html file or something, then change it when you want to open your site.

how do you do the site closed?

copy and save this as your "index.html"

<html>
<head>
<title> Site Closed </title>
</head>
<body>
Sorry, but this site is currently closed.
</body>
</html>

the "index.html" is the main page shown when you visit basically any site.

no. your account with the host will still be alive and active. that just creates a default webpage that will appear to your visitors as they try to visit your main site address.

if you wanted to close your geocities site, you could also put a redirect link on your geocities main page so that any visitors there would automatically be transported to your new site.... if thats what you meant :-)
