Every so often, I get one of those pop-ups from my start menu telling me that windows updates are downloaded and ready to install. I recently downloaded one and it seems like nothing changed at all. Is it absolutely necessary that I download this right away?

No, but the updates "uodate" the SYSTEM not the visual part. So your comp info is ship shape! But it's good to do it!
