Joseph Ratzing "Pope Benedict XVI" will be taking the pope position. Do you agree with this?

I was hoping for that guy from Milan, or the black candidate. This one is anti-everything I think. He even warned that reading Harry Potter can damage a child's soul...

-no opinion-

I don't know the cardinals well enough to have a good opinion.

I didn't know that, but I know that the Vatican said, that it was not good to read it. They also said that about the "Da Vinci Code".

But after what Ratzinger wrote about the role of women in society (that they should not work, stay at home, etc.), I am sure that I don't like him being pope too much. I hoped for someone more moderate, too. But we must wait what he is going to do. Perhaps he will surprise us all.

Same here. I just wish Pope John Paul II wasn't so sick like that. He didn't derserve it. He influnced the world a lot.

I'm not Catholic, so I don't have much of an opinion. If I were, I probably would not like his beliefs - that women should stay at home, and that you shouldn't read Harry Potter or The Da Vinci Code. Just because you read something doesn't make you less religious - it makes you more aware of the things outside of your religion.

We have the same opinions. I'm not Catholic either.

me neither, but it worries me that a lot of people obey things the pope says, even if it can endanger their health or that of others.

Yes, especially because the curch has so much influence in parts of the wolrd, e.g. South America, where a lot of bishops are conservative and people believe everything they say. Like not using condoms and therefore getting aids.

I am not Cathlic, but i was surprised to hear that he picked the name "Benidict XVI" Reminds me of Benidict Arnold...

That sends a chill down spine....

I was hoping that it wouldn't be him, for what Marianne said - the guy is way too conservative for my liking. One of my teachers dubbed him the Panzer pope :P

I think you mean Catholic.

Same here anime_roks. I don't think it's much of a holy name since "Benedict" can be defined as traitor. I HOPE he isn't a traitor.

I'm surprised I was the first one to post this topic, normally I would be the second or third. My Aunt told me this on the way home from the mall (the elected pope thingy, that is)

Did he actually warn people about reading Harry Potter can damage soles?

OMG I might have to go live on pluto if this keeps up!

Actually Benedict is a holy name, after all Saint Benedict is where it came from. I'm pretty sure you know that Benedict and Benedict Arnold didn't share the same time frame...

The thing about you might have to live on pluto if this keeps up...He is just a chosen Catholic Church leader. You may not agree with his conservative ideas, but he isin't all bad. There are good conversative principals too you know. In no way do they impose on the world their ideas, like YOU HAVE TO BE THIS or DO THAT!!! The don't force you to do anything in a way that you'd have no choice too. Like I said he's just a spiritual leader, and the level of his importance varies with how much importance you give him.

Sorry for the double post I couldn't edit this in...

Benedict: From the Late Latin name Benedictus which meant "blessed". Saint Benedict was an Italian monk who founded the Benedictines in the 6th century. This was also the name of 15 (now 16) popes.

I dont believe in that whole "this will destroy your spirit or that will destroy youre spirit." If the pope says taht anime will destroy your spirit, then I am would go crazy. Who would say taht?

if he says the simpsons will destroy your spirit, then I don't know what I'd do...

if he says the LEIA forums will destroy your spirit then I'd just plain use this smiley for the rest of my life :buckt: :buckt: :buckt:

I'm not Catholic, but I will say this:

If he's the head of the Catholic church, and will stand for what the Catholic church has always stood for (according to their doctrine), then that's fine with me. The church is not "worldly" or "of this world", so...conservativism within the church, especially according to doctrine, is fine.

The thing about Harry Potter and the DaVinci Code reminds me of my history teacher who thinks that Disney movies have subliminal messages in them.

I've never read the DaVinci Code, it's too long, no, I think it's just to grown-up.

Patrick

well... maybe not exactly too grown up, but I just don't have the time/nor want to read it.
