This image isn't exactly shaped; it's a normal square/rectangle file, except that it has the same color background as the page (white), so you can't see the edges of the square.
I don't know how this was made, but if I were trying to make it (ignoring the text part, which I assume you can do) I'd use the shapes tool to make the white borders and then use the shapes I drew to cut pieces from an existing image. Let me know if you don't know how to use the shape tool, or if you don't know how paths work.
Photoshop has a shadow option that you can apply to specific layers. If you go to Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow . . . and set the color to greyish blackish you can probably get the same effect. I don't think they used the "shadow" function because that only shadows one side of your image (like in real life; only the side away from the light has shadow). So try that.
Hope I helped at least a little bit.
Luzee12 03-12-2005, 12:39 AM I tried to find some tutorials for you, but I couldn't, so I went and tried it myself.
I found another way to outline the thing besides the shape tool, if you know how to use selections instead. Once you have your shape, use the "outer glow" layer style, but make the "spread" and the "opacity" 100% to get a nice border, and then the "size" will determine how wide the border is. (Note: Also set the Blend Mode to "Normal" in the outer glow menu for an even better outline.) This method works to outline text, too, and you can even change the font or the size and it will stay outlined. I'm very grateful to you for making me discover it.
xx_elmo 03-12-2005, 03:11 PM Thank you, all! =) im going to go try it ^^

It's okay; don't ever apologize for wanting to learn. I'll explain the text first. I'll probably have to come back tomorrow to explain shapes because it's kind of a complicated thing to explain when you're not in person and I have a lot of homework to do today.
To do the text exactly the same, you will need a special font, but you can really use any font you like and get a similar effect. Do you know how to do regular text in Photoshop? Click the button shaped like a capital T on the toolbar to select the text tool, and click and drag to make a textbox. It will make its own new layer automatically, and you can edit what it says after that by double-clicking the layer in the Layers Palette. Then, what this person did was outline it twice, once in white and once in grey. Can you see that?
What you do to outline is select the layer your text is in and then look at the bottom of the Layers Palette. There is a symbol that looks like a lowercase F inside a grey circle. If you click that, a menu comes up, and you want to use "stroke" for the first outline and then "outer glow" for the second outline. Make sure that on both of them the Blend Mode is Normal and the Opacity and Spread are set at 100% (note that stroke doesn't have a Spread setting). Then use the Size setting to adjust how thick the outline is. You can use this same method for outlining anything; just remember that the stroke color goes on the inside, and the outer glow is outside that. You can actually get a nice glowing effect by playing with the color, spread, and size of outer glow. I really like that feature.
I know this isn't very specific, but the very best way to learn Photoshop is to just play with it and figure things out for yourself. After all, it is digital and there IS an undo button. Have fun with it. I'll come back tomorrow, okay? Good luck!
EDIT: I just found this page about shapes in Photoshop. Look and see if you get the idea here; let me know how it goes.

Luzee12 03-15-2005, 09:30 PM Okay, I'm back! I hope this is helpful. I found some great tutorials online for you.
Introduction to the Pen Tool and paths:

Introduction to the Shape Tool:

And just in case you need it, a little talk-through on using paths to cut out the shape you want.

Then just outline your new cut-out shape the way I mentioned above (using stroke and/or outer glow, and you've got your graphic!
xx_elmo 03-19-2005, 02:29 PM THANK YOU SO MUCH LUZEE12..you're the nicest person i've met on this site
xx_elmo 03-19-2005, 02:37 PM I did what you wanted me to do in the text outlining and it worked! but i had a couple problems..first of all, i doubt you can fix this (theres probably a problem with my adobe) that how do i change color of the outline and all..i cant even seem to change the color of the text, i change it to red, or any other color and it makes it gray!
i think this might be because on the right layers palette, next to "background/layer 1/etc" it has the lock sign...maybe you could tell me how to unlock it? thanks again for everything! :buckt: :)
xx_elmo 03-19-2005, 07:03 PM Nevermind my last post the text worked :)
xx_elmo 03-19-2005, 07:18 PM I really love this layout:
