I have had my braces on since last April and I've become so used to them I dont even know they're there. Now I am going to be completely honest, when you first get them on your teeth will be really sore, so I reccomend alot of soup and things that dont require chewing to eat. :) Also, swishing with salt water and taking some advil helps relieve the soreness. It goes away after a few days (sometimes a bit more). Other than that you just have to be careful that you dont break a bracket off when you eat (which is highly unlikely unless you eat things you arent supposed to)

Also when they tighten them up they will be sore for a few days but after a few visits you'll get used to it and soon they wont hurt at all :) With luck I'll be getting mine off this summer :D

I got braces in fifth grade, and lost 8 pounds, I was already skinny for my height too :P It's really hard to eat solid foods for the first week or so, I ate baby food and took LOTS of Tylenol, so you'll definitely have to edit your eating habits for a little while :) My favorite color was teal for my braces. One suggestion is make sure to brush a lot and floss too, it's easy with braces to forget to floss, but your gums will get swollen into your braces otherwise and it's really uncomfortable :P Also, when you get them off, if you haven't brushed too well there are squares on your teeth, I had one on one of my teeth and had to get my teeth bleached professionally to make it go away :D Good luck, you'll be fine :)

How long will you have them?

I remembered the day I got my bottom braces put on (they put the top braces on a few days after). My friends claimed it wasn't as painful as they thought it would be. I must have a low tolerance for pain because it hurt like a brick.

Queen and Lissa basically said everything i would've, so i'll suggest colors :D i liked silver and light blue. i got black a few times too, but it looked kinda scary  it's not too bad, you should get used to it pretty quickly. i felt worse [i]after i got my braces off, i thought i looked really weird :P

good luck, eat soft foods, and make sure you don't lose your wax [random]! because i always forgot/lost my wax whenever i needed it.. my braces made my mouth hurt.. so don't lose your wax, because you never know if/when you might need it :)

I've never had braces - what's the wax for?

sometimes pokey metal parts will cut the innerds of your mouth.. so you put little pieces of wax on the parts that are cutting your mouth so they don't hurt anymore.

They were painful at first, but then you get used to them. The only reason I had to get braces on was due to an evil baby tooth. Some year the tooth will move into it's new home and then I can get the braces off. :)

If you don't like looking inside mouths, don't look at these pictures....

A word of warning, if your orthodontist tells you that you will feel a little pressure, be ready for full scale pain. They never tell you that it will hurt, but it will. Sorry to be so brutally honest. :)
For all you out there with braces, once you get them off and get your retainers, you won't be able to talk for a day or two, and if you leave your retainers out for a few hours, it hurts when you put them back in, so wear them even if you think it looks uncool. :)
I had braces for a little over two years, I got them off April 2004. Now I have retainers and will for a loong time. They are bright fuschia... :)

I had braces in highschool, top & bottom, and I don't remember it hurting all that much. It's probably different for everyone, depending on your teeth. I enjoyed getting my colors changed every month, but when I had to wear rubber bands, that was really annoying. I had mine on for 2 years, so it was really weird when I got them taken off. Couldn't stop licking my teeth, because they were so smooth!

I've had mine for 3.5 years now, I should hopefully have them off before the beginning of next year... I can't say much more than other people have said, for me I never really found it too painful except for the day after getting the braces on or tightened... if the orthodontist doesn't give you one, get a 'tree brush' (don't know if that's the right name or not), really helps with cleaning between/around braces on top of regular brushing and flossing.

I remember that those iron wires where a bit too long and stack in my cheek, that really hurts.

Mine did that, too. I had mouth ulcers often, so definitely keep aspirin around, and soft foods. Mashed potatoes, pudding, soup, applesauce..

I consulted my cousins and yes, it hurts but for a beautiful smile, you just have to go through it. I plan on getting braces but not know, maybe later or maybe not.

For some odd reason the wax wasnt a problem for me...for one it tasted terrible and it also kept falling off...so I just let the wires irritate my mouth for several days until finally my mouth got so used to it it didnt hurt.

I only used wax once or so, my mouth must have developed caluses (sp?).

I've had my braces since last April, and I should get 'em off in August. YAY! :D

Pretty much ditto what everyone else said...but I didn't see it mentioned, so here goes. Do what they tell you. ;) You'll get them off a whoooole lot sooner if you take good care of them. Be careful what you eat, especially. A lot of people don't see to have any problem with it, but mine break whenever I eat chocolate. (Then again, I've broken mine eating pizza, too...and almonds...but never popcorn, surprisingly enough). They will hurt, keep soft food around... Wax seems to help sometimes if they dig into your mouth. My brackets that have the little hooks on mine will tear big holes in my mouth that take a couple days to heal, and wax helps with that. And, like KR said, you get used to them after a while, and whenever you get them adjusted, you get used to it hurting.
