View Full Version : Server Server Server Server Server!
darklitch 02-12-2005, 10:10 PM I am trying to use my computer as a server. So far i have installed WAMP5. When I go to my ip address (192.168.0.2) I get my website. If i go to my ip address on another computer i get nothing. What do i do next?
thanks in advance,
darklitch
I will leave my computer on untell 9:00 2/12/05 so you can test the ip.
darklitch 02-12-2005, 11:21 PM i believe this is because my isp does not support servers. Do you know any internet service providers that support servers?
DisturbedOne 02-12-2005, 11:25 PM well i dunno if its because your isp doesnt support webservers (mine dont but ive got one http://67.163.235.232 altho im using it for streaming mp3s) maybe its your server software itself??
Dude128 02-12-2005, 11:31 PM I don't think that's your actual IP- I believe 192.168.x.x is reserved. like the IP to access my router at home from within the network is in that range, but you wouldn't be able to use the same address from outside the network to access it. try finding a site that will tell you the IP address it sees from over the Internet.
bejayel 02-13-2005, 04:23 AM i know exactly what it is :). i had this problem myself when i first started up a server. i am going to take a wild stab tha tyou have windows xp home and service pack 2?? Here is what you need to do to make yoru website viewable on other computers
click: Start --> Control Panel --> Windows Firewall
Click the Exceptions tab and click the Add Port... button. Add the TCP port 80. And name it somehting like Server port.
This will make yoru website jump to life on the net. Hope that helped.
please note than if you use a differant fire wall, or program for worm blocking like norton, you will have to open up the tcp port in that program. good luck.
Dude128 02-13-2005, 04:39 AM I just thought to check (http://www.arin.net/whois) and that isn't your actual IP address- the 192.168 block is reserved, so it can't be the one provided to you by your ISP.
plus that site is just amusing in general, in an enormously geeky sort of way- I found out using that site that my school owns upwards of 263,000 (yes, two hundred sixty three THOUSAND) IP addresses lol
</off topic-ness> :P
EDIT: I realized I accidentally said host when I meant ISP :P

I don't have service pack 2. Is there a way to find out what my firewall is?
Sphere 02-15-2005, 04:39 PM 192.168.*.* is your internal ip.
find the ip of your Gateway (router i think) by going to www.whatismyip.com
maybe you have to forward some ports from the router to your server
darklitch 02-16-2005, 01:40 AM it says my ip is 65.97.28.169 what do i do next?
Sphere 02-16-2005, 10:41 AM try to forward port 80 of your router to your server
darklitch 02-19-2005, 06:31 PM try to forward port 80 of your router to your server
I am feeling realy stupid... How do i do this?
bejayel 02-20-2005, 08:09 PM what kind of router do you have? I dont have any personal experience with a router, except this crappy old one i got. I would have to say that somewhere in yrou comptuer yoru router has been installed. From ther eyou can check the setting and open up certain ports, forward ports, etc etc. If you didnt have to install your router (like me) then this wont be necessary.
If yo uplug the internet directly into yoru computer, and you still cant get a connection from outside computer, then that means that you have a fire wall on your computer. Often times the firewill program will have an icon in the system tray. (that part of yoru screen that the clock is located in.) Just right click stuff untill you find one that has somethign to do with a firewall. If that doesnt work, ask yrou parents. They should know if you have some sort of firewall set up or not.
darklitch 02-24-2005, 12:24 PM I am using a netgear router.
I don't understand a thing about port forwarding but I found something on it. Ths is what it looks like...
http://home.comcast.net/~lizard_women/router.jpg
when you click "add custom service" you get this...
http://home.comcast.net/~lizard_women/router2.jpg
thanks
bejayel 02-24-2005, 05:37 PM my guess. Type in server name as server port. start port 80, end port 80. Then your ip address??? i have never worked with stuff like that before so i dont really know. Also, there are two icon in your system tray. one is norton antivirus, and i dont know the other one. it is to the right of norton. I am guessing it is a firewall. Anyway newer versions of norton have a worm protection feature, you will have to make sure that apache is an exception in there. And if that is a firewall, you will have to make sure that apache is also an exceptin, or jsut open up port 80 in there.
darklitch 02-24-2005, 09:10 PM okay, I put...
Service Name - Server
Starting Port - 80
Ending Port - 80
Server IP Address - 65.97.28.169
the ip address is the ip address for the computer i am on now. (the one i want to use as a server)
When i applyed the changes my internet left me. So I did a system restore and the Internet worked again. (weird aint it?)
Then I deleted whatever i just did.
Do i use that ip address or the one for my router?
Do i use a different Service Name?
bejayel 02-25-2005, 02:48 AM i am stumped. maybe try a google search for tutorials on port forwarding on yoru particular router.
darklitch 02-25-2005, 05:48 PM Thanks for your help anyway.
BTW does the isp have to support servers? I heard from someone that your isp must support servers. I am using comcast cable.
bejayel 02-26-2005, 01:03 AM yes, some isp's do not allow incomming connections on certain ports..I beleive it costs extra for them to be opened up.
