I'm trying to prevent direct linking..
where do I write this file..I tried to write it in notepad but it saved as nameoffile.htaccess.txt
should it be .htaccess.txt
also I want to have an image if people do try to direct link..does it have to be a gif or can it be a jpg?

you can write it in notepad but you have to save it as ".htaccess" with the quotes so it doesn't put an extension at the end of it...
check this out for your other question:

okay thanks..
but about the gif or jpg image..I already looked there. and this is all it says..
"Replace your domain name and the file name of the gif you want to show up when someone direct links. Have fun!!!"
so does that mean it HAS to be a gif..or is that just how she did it?

i don't think it has to be a .gif file. that's probably just the example that lissa used when she wrote the tutorial.
yes, it can be either gif or jpg.

okay I'm still having trouble..I copied exactly what lissa had ...I replaced my domain exactly...careful not to delete any punctuation. I saved it ".htaccess". I uploaded it.. now maybe it's going into the wrong place..but I'm uploading it into the same directory where my index.html page is...is this right?
yup, thats the right place.
did you check...
1. that your host supports the usage of htaccess files?
2. that your host supports the mod_rewrite command for htaccess?

Yes, because many times free hosts do not support such files.

how do I find out if my host supports those things? It's not a free site I pay for it through godaddy...I've looked through their faq's but I don't see anything regarding it...

Try e-mailing them.
Or if they sent anything to you when you signed up read through that and see if it tells you what you can or cannot do.
