I am trying to build a new layout for my site and I thought I'd find out what public opinion is.....

What kinds of things do you like and not like seeing in websites (both for techical purpose and just making it visually nice)?

Splash screens?
Frames?
Iframes?
Background images?
Plain background colours?
Centered layout?
Layouts to one side?
Long layouts or ones you don't have to scroll?
Small layouts?

..............whatever.

Tell me what you guys like and don't like........just wondering what general consensus is.

Okay.. erm..

I like:

Splash screens
Iframes
Layouts that scroll downwards
Divs
Nice graphics
Unusual layouts

I dont like:

Frames
Layouts that scroll sideways
Small layouts
Layouts that look unfinished

i think you should make what you like yourself. Although many people don't like horizontal layouts i dont' think you can't make them just because people dont' like them. if you like to make one, go ahead! it's your site

what you could do:
- splash screen for the cliques etc or other things that look messy in your layout
- iframes
- pop-ups
- clean layout; you can better save in optimized .gif or .png then have a blurry image online. People must just be patient... if they want to see something nice
- div layouts; easy and much more options then with tables

don't do:
- transparent iframes without setting a bgcolor or background. Many people still use below version IE 5.5 so they won't see anything from the background in the iframe
- pop-ups bigger then 800x600 in size. Annoying for those who have 800x600 will not see the whole layout.
- animated backgrounds a no no

I like Iframes...but I'm never smart enought to find out how to make the background a certain color
A good layout-perhaps large enough/small enough so it looks good in ANY resolution?
Nothing that scrolls all the way sideways JUST to see the content. That's just too annoying.
A counter-mayhaps you promise a plug to the 10,000th visitor?
And, of course-lovely lovely content! Viewers value that above anything else, most of the time!

Splash screens? no.
Frames? yes if done correctly.
Iframes? yes if done correctly.
Background images? yes, if moderate and appropriate.
Plain background colours? yes, if moderate and appropriate.
Centered layout? depends on content being shown.
Layouts to one side? depends on content being shown.
Long layouts or ones you don't have to scroll? preferably less than 2 screens scrolling down.
Small layouts? small???

By small layouts I mean those layouts that use just like a corner of the screen with a really small iframe that's like 300x500 or something small and silly like that....I personally don't like them because they always have so much blank space and I find them hard to read.

just like you give your other pages a background color:

<body bgcolor="colorhere">

or in your stylesheet

body {background-color: colorhere; }

Splash screens?
are a waste of webspace, they really don't do much.

Frames?
are extra pages the user has to load so they to slow.

Iframes?
may not work in non internet explorer or older browser

Background images?
i like, even though i don't use them. it's more preference but i like solid backgrounds. just make sure your image isn't to big.

Plain background colours?
i like, nice muted colors :)

Centered layout?
makes no difference to me.

Layouts to one side?
makes no difference to me.

Long layouts or ones you don't have to scroll?
long pages are ok but not to long. i don't like to much content, information overload :p

Small layouts?
i like things broken up into seperate pages.

What about drop down menus? I've personally never used one but I was just creating a new layout and I liked the look of it but I don't know if they work on any browser or what.

i like dropdown menus they're kind a cooly. the problem with them is that there are compatibility problems with certain browsers. i pretty much shy away from javascript because of compatibility. even if it's suppose to work the user may just have there javascript turned off. same with cookies and anything else that's dependant on the user machine.

i like to put everything on the server. i'm a java programmer so i know how to do all that fancy stuff. in my job everything has to work for 100% of users and the only way i can ensure that is to put everything on the server.
