Hi!

I was making a webpage and came to the thought, what would happen if I were to change the resolution! I changed it and what do you know, I have a scroll bar at the bottom because it's too wide (this was at 800 x 600 and I was making the page at 1024 x 768). Now I thought, what would happen if I were to see if this would happen on a different web site. So I went to PC Express (http://www.pc-express.com.au). Checked it at different resolutions and it was fine no problems. It wasn't any wider and it fit all on the window. How do they do this?

Well its fairly simple! You are using a fixed-width layout, that is to say your content has a certain width, like 1000 pixels.

The other way you can make websites, is "full-browser". These use percentages to set the width of their main content, like <td>'s or <div>'s.

both full browser and fixed width layouts are good and commonly used! Theres no right or wrong. Full browser layouts tend to be more differcult to work with, because one or more sections of the website have to stretch.

Also, when you're making a fixed-width layout (which is what you're doing) make sure it works in 800x600 or above, its basicly standard. 800x600 users make up for 19% of computer-users. I'm at 1280x1024 myself, so full browser layouts tend to be obscured because of the width of my screen. Its differcult to get them right, but it can be rewarding!!
