View Full Version : PSP7 help with font
alicewonderland 11-16-2004, 06:14 AM I use PSP 7 as mentioned in the title and I d/led a couple of fonts and I installed all the fonts as normal, but one of the fonts won't be listed in PSP and I don't understand why not. The file type is no different than the others and it is a .ttf file (truetype font) If anyone has any solutions, let me know. Thankies bunches ^^.
tokyo bleu 11-16-2004, 07:17 AM Does this particular font show up in other places (i.e. MS Paint, Wordpad)? If not, it could be corrupted.
alicewonderland 11-16-2004, 08:25 AM :( guess it is corrupted then, is there a way to fix that.. or should i just redownload it? or would that not help at all?
raeanne 11-16-2004, 08:59 AM From what I have learned, there are a lot fonts that will not work with XP, has something to do with "XPs higher standards". If you are running XP it will not do any good to download it again. You might try asking in alt.binaries.font newsgroup, there are people there who know how to fix it.
AFWIW, font collecting can get very addicting (I have over 2500). It is not a good idea to "install", them. Too many installed fonts will slow down both your OS and other progams. Put them in another folder somewhere (other than Windows font folder) and get a font viewer.

alicewonderland 11-16-2004, 01:11 PM Hmm... well, I don't use XP. I actually use Windows 98 second edition. As for the 2,500 fonts that you have WOWZERS! lol. I -uh... don't have that many. Maybe 100 to 150 at the most... maybe even less. I'm not sure, really. I am curious, however, about using them yet not installing them. I'm not quite sure if I understand how that works or not or if I read something wrong. Anyways, I have yet to re-download b/c for some reason the site isn't working for me at the moment, but hopefully it will come back up later. Perhaps that may have something to do with it... hm. Well, thanks again for all your help and information.
MaGiCSuN 11-16-2004, 01:37 PM are you sure the name is right? sometimes font names are different in the program then on the file. I have that allot haha, then i'm searching for the beginning letter of the font name, while the filename has a different letter and i believe that the programs take over the filename in the program itself.
if not, try a search for the same font on www.google.com and download it from another place and see what happens with that one :)
love,
Mirna
raeanne 11-16-2004, 02:44 PM I'm just a beginning collector, I know people who have 10s of thousands lol. There is no way I could ever install that many into my Windows folder. I am not sure but I think Windows is limited to 1000. Depending how long the file names are it may be less. Even at 1000 it would probably take 10 to boot my machine or any program that uses fonts because it has to read each one while loading.
Anyway, to use fonts without installing them the best way is to get a font viewer. This will let you see how many fonts look before you try them in your program (especially good if you are not sure what would look good with your project), lets you use them without installing, and is a good way to organize them. I use Typograf, which imho is the best but it costs $35(US). I use to use The Font thing, it is freeware, it's also good and it is easy to use. You can get it HERE (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html) . The font thing has a pretty simple interface and is pretty much self-explanatory.
The second way to use them is open the font you want to use by double clicking on it then minimize it to the taskbar. You can use it in any program as long as it is open this way. When you are done just close it. This is the inconvienent way because you can't compare how they will look side by side.
And as the other poster mentioned sometimes the fonts are not named the same. This is especially true if you see a name something like this spria___.ttf. I has something to do with the naming limitations in DOS (don't quote me but I think DOS was limited to 8 characters.) You can rename them to the names that the authors originally used (before the DOS conversion). The above example, after rename, could be something like sprialkisses.ttf. If you are going to become a collector (and even if you are not just in case this is your problem now) I would recommend getting a renamer. The one I use iscalled the TrueType Renamer (http://www.dafont.com/en/soft.php) (freeware). All you do to use this is point it to the folder where the fonts are and it will rename them.
And just in case you are wondering I download all my fonts into one folder, run the renamer, organize them into styles then move them into my other folders. But, like I said I am only a beginner and there are other ways to do it.
HTH I know its probably more than you wanted to know

edit: oh and what font are you looking for maybe I have it or can find it for you?
alicewonderland 11-17-2004, 06:38 AM hehe ^^ actually I GOT IT TO WORK! YEY! Well, I didn't really get it to work. As the person, second post from this one (up), I forget who posted <.< >.> hehe, was right! The name was just different and I really did not notice! ACK! xD hehe oh well, thank you everyone for the information and what not. Even though I didn't really need help in the end, I learnt a lot from what you've all just told me, so, I can say it wasn't a wasted post! ^^ sowwy about that ;_; ebil mistake.
