View Full Version : can we just buy the domain and not the host? orchid1 04-17-2003, 11:38 AM I mean like can I have my domain name for my site at getocities or angelfire (free host). Is there anyway I can do that? sebluver 04-17-2003, 11:40 AM I don't understand what you mean... orchid1 04-17-2003, 11:51 AM ok, you know those fast url from bravenet.com? (clik.to/ clix.to/ now.at/...etc) The clik.to/blahblah is not the actually url of the site but it lead to the site. So instead of using clik.to can I buy a domain for it? Inspired 04-17-2003, 12:46 PM Ok, let me clear this up for you!! You can buy just a domain. UKreg.com is such a company where you can buy your domain (such as myname.com or myname.co.uk, etc). Once you have bought the domain (around £10 a year for a .com or .net), you will be able to configure it. It does take a couple of days for a domain to become 'operational', this is normal. When you configure the domain, select 'UKReg free services' (or similar and you will be able to 'point' the domain at your geocities address. Another company is the UK based oneandone.co.uk. Just because it is in the UK, you can still use it in the US. Hope this helps! I have domains at UKReg so if you need any help... pb&j 04-17-2003, 01:19 PM to make the domain name point to a host, that host must give you a set of dns numbers. without these numbers, the domain name points nowhere. to get these numbers, you will have to pay for a hosting package, whether you want to stick with geocities and go up to the plus or pro package or find a new host. (dunno about geocities.uk they may be different). Inspired 04-17-2003, 01:28 PM Don't like arguing, but... You can have name based forwarding. The company who you have purchased a domain from hosts that domain on their server. The nameservers (the dns numbers pb&j was talking about) only tell the various routers around the world where the domain is. Name based forwarding is the same principle as the meta refresh tag. If you have used that tag (have copied it below) you will know that you can automatically force a user to go to another page. Name based forwarding is the same. One of my domains uses name based forwarding to point to my main site. <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;URL=http://www.google.com"> The refresh bit tells the page to refresh. The 0 is in how many seconds the page should be refreshed The URL is the web-site or page that the page should refresh to. Loren 04-17-2003, 03:13 PM You can by a domain name at register.com for $35 a year, but that has no servering so you would have to server your website, or you could use freeservers and get a domian with ads and servering for $32.50 a year, or without ads for $38.49 a year. Sage 04-19-2003, 03:06 AM You can buy a domain name, but sometimes people CAN have sites using those domain names without actually buying hosting themselves. They can either get it from places like fateback.com where they offer free hosting if you already have or just have purchased a domain name. Or you could find a good friend who has a lot of space and bought hosting themselves to actually host YOU. It's like... having hostees, in a way. If your certain friend wouldn't mind, they have a certain amount of domains they can host on their account of webspace. |
