View Full Version : what is reseller? orchid2 04-12-2003, 10:35 AM I'm looking for a host and I saw this word. What is it? epolady 04-12-2003, 11:39 AM Basically it's someone who will be doing either (or both) reselling the space, etc provided to other customers or using the space provided for their sites, usually used by someone (or more) who run multiple sites. Sometimes people resell because they don't have the money for a big company etc. orchid2 04-12-2003, 11:54 AM So does that mean buy a host from a reseller would be cheaper? Another question, do we get to have our own domain name too? Or we have to use theirs. epolady 04-12-2003, 11:59 AM Not neccessarily, resellers make their own price and packages. Sometimes it's cheaper, sometimes not. Edit: Buyer beware, do your homework on a host before buying. I've heard a lot of horror stories. You get what you pay for. About the domain, yes you do have to get your own domain, I believe some may give you a temporary IP address as a domain, but then when your domain updates correctly, it can be used as you would use any other domain. Most hosting companies will register most TLDs (.com/.net/.org +), but be advised, that some companies may register the domain in THEIR name, leaving them the owner not you, which is why people stress that you register it yourself (through godaddy.com, namecheap.com etc), thus ensuring YOU are the owner and not someone else. HTH. orchid2 04-12-2003, 12:56 PM I don't really understand the last part "Most hosting companies will register most TLDs (.com/.net/.org +), but be advised, that some companies may register the domain in THEIR name, leaving them the owner not you, which is why people stress that you register it yourself (through godaddy.com, namecheap.com etc), thus ensuring YOU are the owner and not someone else." What you mean their name? Is it likoe, www.mysitename.theirname? I'm not very good at these stuff. And on the last sentence "ensuring YOU are the owner and not someone else." Are you talking about the domain name? or the host? epolady 04-12-2003, 04:44 PM I was talking about a domain name, (i.e. www.blahblah.com), you have to register (which includes paying) for a domain. Most companies will register a domain name for you, but some of the time they will keep it because they (the host) registered it in their name, making them the owner and not you. When I said "ensuring YOU are the owner and not someone else." I meant that YOU are the owner of the domain name not anyone else, so you can control it, versus the hosting company. orchid2 04-13-2003, 11:04 AM sorry to bother you again. I wanted to ask how do we know if we're the owner or them? I'm very confuse cause when I get a domain name people will use that name to get to my site, what's there to keep or own? epolady 04-13-2003, 11:23 AM If you register the domain through a registar (see links above), you are the owner, visitors will be able to visit your site even if a host owns it. But when you own the domain name, you have control over it, and it helps when moving to a new host. What's to own? The name. The unique URL name that is yours and only yours (unless it's copywritten by a major company), and no one else can take it from you, unless you fail to re-register it. I think I confused you on my initial post, I'm sorry. I'm just trying to prevent more horror stories and spread a lil helpful info, but it's causing confusion... :\ |
