Hello people,

I was searching on the web because i found out that my temporary internet files folder took up 445 MB of my harddisk!! So i searched around to see if there was any solution to it to clean that up.

there are files in your Temporary Internet Files folder that you can't see, and that have no function but do take up allot of space. This is how you can delete them (i described for Windows 98 below, but i'm sure you can also do this in other versions):

1. restart your computer (start > close etc) but choose the option "restart in MS-DOS"
2. if you see the C:\ prompt then type cd\windows and hit enter
3. now you see C:\windows and you type deltree tempor~1 and hit enter
when asking if you want to confirm press "Y"

now it should be deleting your files. I don't know what happens at your computer but with mine i waited and waited and nothing happened so i restarted it myself (just hit alt + ctrl + delete) and it seemed that the files got deleted

after starting up again it could be that the restart takes a bit longer then usual because windows has to make a new Temporary Internet Files folder. Don't worry, this will be clean now. Just repeat this after a while and it cleans up a whole bunch of MB's for you :)

My harddisk is 1,8 GB (not much i know) and it cleaned up 25% of it with that thing that i explained above.

NOTE: to check how many MB's or KB's your Temporary Internet Files folder takes up (not the TEMP folder but the Temporary internet files folder) go to C:\windows\ under "this computer" and then right click on the folder and choose "properties" it should give you the amount of files etc that is inside that folder.

Good luck! and you can still do a "disk cleanup" under "system" in the accoires menu under "start".

Are you talking about downloads when you talk about the temporary files? Because I know they make the temporary files when you open up the downloads...

Sorry if I make no sense. It's this stupid cold. I'll say something more comprehendible when I'm fully conscious.

I have no idea which files get deleted, because i can't see them but they are there. When i delete everything by hand and i empty my recycle and then go to Temporary Internet Files and right click "properties" it still says it has 445 MB in it, while i deleted everything that i saw. THOSE are the files i'm talking about.

Temporary Internet files is the name of a folder, and it contains files like graphics, cookies (wich don't get deleted btw so that'sa good thing), html pages that you visited lately. Most files will be cleaned up after a while, depends on how many days you have filled in in your Internet Tools (configuration > internet tools) because after those days the old files will be deleted automatically. But those files you can't see stay there, no matter how many times you run "disk cleanup" they won't get deleted only with the way i described.

You have a folder TEMP and a folder Temporary Internet Files in your C:\Windows. I'm talking about Temporary Internet Files, because TEMP doesn't store (that much) 'invisible' files like Temporary Internet Files does.

If you can't choose to restart in MS-DOS then restart normal and hit F8 in the beginning till some options come up. One of the options says "run in MS-DOS mode" so select that and hit "enter" and it should work fine too.

That's the best thing of it :) It only deletes what is totally useless and not nessecary to use. So things that only take up space, and have no function at all.
