direct linking is taking an image that is at say www.someonesdomain.com/images/prettyimage.gif and putting it on your site with <img src="http://www.someonesdomain.com/images/prettyimage.gif">

site a - belongs to you.
site b - belongs to someone else.

you have a cool image on your site. you have it uploaded to your site. it takes up space on your site. it takes up "bandwidth" (download time) on your site when a visitors views your page containing the image. all normal stuff.

site b person comes along and decides they like that image really much. they link to it directly (as seen in previous post) instead of asking you nicely to copy and upload it to their own site. now when that image is viewed on site b... the image is loading from your site taking up more of your bandwidth.

your host will list your bandwidth amount allowed per month for your features. what happens if a thousand people link or view that linked image? you go over your allowed amount and get charged a big bill or may be seeing slow times on your site viewing. not happy times :(

Direct linking is when somebody right clicks on your picture you've uploaded and selects properties to see what you have named it.

Then they will upload link to that picture on their site using your name.

Basically, it slows your site down and could get it down until the end of the month. :)

Direct linking is using a picture and/or movie on their site from someone else's host.

Erm... are all that we said understandable?
