View Full Version : i hate summer reading JiNgLeBeLLz77 08-23-2004, 08:10 AM it's 1 a.m. and i'm finishing up summer reading... and tomorrow school starts... i just want to know... WHY iN THE WORLD DO THEY GiVE SO MUCH SUMMER READiNG?! goodnesss it drives me crazy... Chris 08-23-2004, 08:29 AM Unlucky. I don't get any reading over the summer. Well, not this year at least. Shouldn't u have been reading rather than being on LEIA? Naughty JingleBellz! Chris :D Merike 08-23-2004, 08:38 AM We have to read 11 books this year. And we can choose some of them. Not whatever we want but just one out of few. Our teacher suggested that we read some of during summer but I've only read a bit of the first one. That's because I forgot really quickly what I've read about. And she always asks so tricky questions that the better you remember the better. Uhh, too much "better"s... LesPaul59 08-23-2004, 04:26 PM Bah I love to read, but the book the school gave me royally stinks. At first, I read the first few pages and threw it across the room it stunk so bad. I'm upto 300 of 450 pages and hoping to finish today to just end the torture. Only school can suck the fun out of reading sisqoluv 08-23-2004, 05:42 PM I still have one more book to read, and it's 30 something chapters yet I'm only at 5 or 6 :( At least the book is starting to get interesting... However, I have projects to do with each book. Boo! I don't start school until Wedensday, so I should spend today finishing up. thezeppzone 08-23-2004, 05:43 PM here the only thing is for AP classes, where they get work they have to do for the summer. im not in any ap classes, i was supposed to be, but the class got cancelled, so...yeh..... Dude128 08-23-2004, 08:39 PM the book the school gave me royally stinks. content quality or odor? I hate library books because they always have a smell to them. haha. for the past 2 years I've had to read 3 books and fill out "reader response record" things, basically title, author, characters, plot summary, themes, etc. and the 2 years before that I had to read 2 books and fill out slightly more in-depth sheets (that were like 4 pages long, compared to the single page reader response records). yay for starting college :P sjb 08-23-2004, 08:49 PM I'm lucky i don't have to do any summer homework, and i haven't read a book since..... last semester for geography and that was one of those books for 7 year old on how to make bread, and before that probably when i had english so end of december, reading othello... and remembering all the themes :S stargrl329 08-23-2004, 09:23 PM In the past I've had to read 3 books and fill out long forms for each one. This year I'm going into high school and I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to be doing -- at the end of school they told us we'd have to write a journal-type thing and we'd get more info in the mail, but the letter I got said we only have to "bring the book to class and be prepared to discuss it." I'm taking option #2 and hoping that's what my teachers are expecting. :P LesPaul59 08-24-2004, 01:37 AM content quality or odor? I hate library books because they always have a smell to them. haha. for the past 2 years I've had to read 3 books and fill out "reader response record" things, basically title, author, characters, plot summary, themes, etc. and the 2 years before that I had to read 2 books and fill out slightly more in-depth sheets (that were like 4 pages long, compared to the single page reader response records). yay for starting college :P I bought the book myself ;) The answer: Quality all the way ;) The Library books always do have that smell. "Hey I'm a book at your local library. I've been in 100s of houses, in 100s of hands, and unbenounced to you, reader 125 dropped me in a pile of dog poop, but wait, books can't talk ;)" :P <edit> Jeeze what's up the winks heh Dude128 08-24-2004, 02:42 AM I've always purchased summer reading books myself as well... I just can't stand library books. plus thinking of where they've been always makes me think of the episode of Seinfeld where George brings a book into the bathroom at the bookstore, so they make him buy it, and he can't return it because it's been "flagged". heh :P and on top of that, the library closest to me is about the size of a postage stamp (maybe a little smaller :P), and their selection is awful. there is one ginormous library in the same system, but I'd have to go all the way into downtown Poughkeepsie (and it's on the same road as a gas station that's like, basically the drug capital of the area, from what I've heard of it :P) ::cringes:: :P sisqoluv 08-24-2004, 03:46 AM I usually get my summer reading books online in full text ;) This year, I couldn't find one so I had to get it from the local library. Rosekeet 08-24-2004, 07:33 PM I live in this little surfer town and our library has like NOTHING. I've finished all my summer reading and now i have two days to teach myself the parts of speech, phrases and clauses! YEA!!!! It's really stupid. Honors classes are so lame where I live. They teach the normal and stupid classes grammar but not us. I have no IDEA what I'm doing and I'm smart, I swear! CKY Chick 08-24-2004, 09:52 PM the only people at my school that have summer reading is in your in honors...and the book we have to read isnt that bad...its the 33 page (16 front & back) packet thats bad. but they give more and more books as you get older if your in honors...so i dont think ill be taking those classes. =) bwaybabe325 08-24-2004, 09:56 PM I had 5 summer reading books, and I never read two of them and still got a B on my exam!! :) Throughout the year, we'll end up reading about 20 books, which is crazy!! That's like... More than a book a week, since I only have the class for one semester. And the books aren't easy either!! We're reading Frankenstein, and some Shakespeare, etc... EEK!!! But, I'm totally with you. I think schools should take it easy on summer reading. :P xoxo CKY Chick 08-24-2004, 10:00 PM frankenstein sounds like fun to me...i liked shakespeare too...cause we had to act it out & stuff bwaybabe325 08-24-2004, 10:10 PM AMEN! I love Shakespeare, but I was talking length... Everything is sooo long! Hopefully, in those 20 "books" we'll have some short stories... I HOPE!! :P xoxo CKY Chick 08-24-2004, 11:51 PM oh yeah..most of the times i don't even read the book, or the short stories...just find out what the general idea and plot was  kittycat 08-25-2004, 12:00 AM You seriously read like 20 books? Here is so slack compared to that, we read 4 books, 1 Shakespeare play, and a few short stories, no summer reading or any of that junk either :P These classes are supposed to be so 'difficult' but they really aren't, it's sad :P Xaturna 08-25-2004, 12:04 AM *frown* Maybe I'm just weird... but i LOVE reading, summer reading, school reading, my own reading, etc. etc. I have finished all the books I 've got this summer *sigh* And NEED MORE! CKY Chick 08-25-2004, 12:58 AM i like reading SOMETIMES..but not over the summer..i have better things to do. like sit and talk on LEIA  LesPaul59 08-25-2004, 03:37 PM hahahaha. I love reading too, but not when I'm forced to read a book I hate. chicksineggz 08-25-2004, 10:46 PM well.. i only have to read one book.. hehe.. but i still didnt read it! Sephira 08-25-2004, 11:25 PM when i was in middle school, they always assigned summer reading, like 15 books or so. i was upset until i found out the books they assigned were actually -good-. i was so surprised. i still re-read some of those books even now. what i didn't like was when the teachers tried to assign you summer reading, then expect an essay on one of the books on the first day of school. but no one ever did them so they stopped assigning papers over the break. :) Monkey Bizzle 08-25-2004, 11:40 PM when i was in middle school, they always assigned summer reading, like 15 books or so. i was upset until i found out the books they assigned were actually -good-. i was so surprised. i still re-read some of those books even now. what i didn't like was when the teachers tried to assign you summer reading, then expect an essay on one of the books on the first day of school. but no one ever did them so they stopped assigning papers over the break. :) the only book that was assigned that i actually read was "bridge to taribethia" or whatever it was called during the summer before 6th grade... and never ever ever did we ever have to do anything related to any of the books ever... stupid magnet program trying to make us all smart and stuff... =P Sephira 08-25-2004, 11:42 PM i remember that. "Bridge to Teritbithia" and "Summer of My German Solider" made me cry all summer long. stupid teachers. bwaybabe325 08-26-2004, 01:24 AM *frown* Maybe I'm just weird... but i LOVE reading, summer reading, school reading, my own reading, etc. etc. I have finished all the books I 've got this summer *sigh* And NEED MORE! Yeah, I like reading too, but I have so much other stuff to do! So when the assign us a new book every week, it gets a little bit hectic! But, as long as the book is GOOD, I can usually survive it! :) xoxo |
