As you may know I'm gonna put up a big website that requires a lot of space and bandwith. And someone adviced me to get a private server so that tonz of people could get into my site and download stuff from there!!! Does anyone know how to get a private server? Does it cost any money to get a private server??? Do you all know what exactly a private server is??? And do you recomend me getting one for my big website??? Lemme know, will ya :) Thanks in advance!

they probably meant a dedicated server. a lot of hosts have both shared servers and dedicated servers, so you can probably look into a lot of the same ones that you've probably already seen.

it's just a server that's dedicated to you- there are no other sites on it. expect to pay $200+ per month for it, though.

I wouldn't start with a dedicated server. definately get a shared plan first, and see if its really necessary. most likely, it's not.

Yeah; They may have meant a dedicated server. But they said that you could just download this program from a website, store all your website files on your computer and use your internet provider as a server and it would be FREE!!! They said that you would get unlimited bandwith, and that your internet provider would probobly let you use up to 12000 GB of space...Is this guy talking BS, or is there actually such a thing???

Thanks for telling me a lil bit more about shared servers and dedicated servers! It's strange that you have to pay so much for a dedicated server if you could get it for free from your Internet Service Provider...*scratches head*

yes, you can host a website off your computer, but you need a reliable, high speed connection. also beware, some ISPs don't allow you to host a server.

hosting companies have redundant high speed connections, backup power, and better servers. thats why it costs them a lot.

to set up a server, you need a fair amount of software, which I've heard can be difficult to install.

you also need AT LEAST cable or DSL, and you need to keep your computer on all the time. any time you lose power or your connection fails, your site goes down. and you are limited by the amount of bandwidth you have. you would never ever get 12000 GB of bandwidth. also, if your site is busy, your internet speeds will drop.

from a host, you can get as much space or bandwidth as you want, if you can pay for it.

why not try to get hosted by someone?I know plenty of new domain name owners with plenty of space that would probably be willing to take you under their wing (myself included)

there is no such thing as unlimited space and bandwidth, unless you're like Bill Gates or somethin

Whoa...So you need cable or DSL as well in order to host a website off your computer! It sounds like it's really advanced!!! Especially since you need to keep your computer on all the time. Thanks again for telling me more about this! You totally rock!!!

So you are still limited by the amount of bandwith you get if you actually have your own server? I mean, how does Mtv.com, Yahoo.com and other HUGE sites like that get so many visitors a day then? LOL They probobly pay a whole lot for it though! But it has to be POSSIBLE if you have the money, right? So what's the hosting company that offers the most space and bandwith that you know about? Cause I really want a big website!!! *hehehe*

Ohhh...So if my site is busy, my internet speed will drop. That totally suc*s!!! Blah...It sounds like it's better to get hosted then! I really hope that I find some hosting company that offers a lot of space and bandwith!!!
