This is just a random question I've been wondering about for some time now. Since this time next year I will be starting college, I hope I will get a new computer -crosses fingers-. What I was wondering is, I know you can upgrade OSs, but can you "downgrade" them? Like, all new computers now have XP, I believe. Could I (well, not ME, but someone that is computer smart) take that off and put 98 on it? My reason being that I have used XP, ME, and 2000 before, and personally dislike them....I like 98, though.

Ah :) I know what you mean, 98 is the best. :D I am not sure if you can completely downgrade, but i know that it is possible to have 2 operating systems installed at one time, and when your PC starts up, you just choose which one you want to use, or something like that. :)

i don't know if you can downgrade but you can just install 98 instead of one of the others... and if you get a puter with one of those on it anyways, just reformat since you won't have anything on there anyways and install 98...

If I understand it correctly (and I might not, since I R DUM), you can downgrade from XP>98 only if you upgraded from 98 to begin with, not if you bought it with XP already on it; you'd need to wipe the drive and start from scratch. Or yeah, you could make a new partition and dual boot, but that takes up space, so if you don't want one of them... I guess you could use it as a backup in case your main one gets messed up (virus, etc.), but I wouldn't use another Windows OS for that.

Thanks for all the help! I'm quite relieved to hear that it's possible...I'd been worrying about this for a while :D
Queen- glad to know I'm not the only 98 lover. My school uses XP on the newer computers, and I hate it...sure, it's prettier, but otherwise, bleh. lol

<random> XP is the only one I haven't crashed yet </random>

I think XP comes with some downgrade option, but I forget. If you buy it, be sure to read through the manuals and all that.

XP is the only one I haven't crashed yet.
XP does have that feature whereas other versions do not... I had XP but I switched to 2000 just because I had a hacked copy of XP and I was tired of not being able to upgrade... so far I like XP better... 2000 just runs TOOOOO slow...

the only problem is that people are stopping support for windows 98 and it's becoming obsolete. As much as you like it, you're not going to be able to have it for much longer. All the games and stuff are starting to not include windows 98.

I personally have had no problems with windows xp

Yeah, I knew they had already stopped making it, or had at least heard so. I'm sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place (or I think that's how the saying goes..heh)-- having 98 has it's pros (I prefer it more), and cons (the whole becoming obsolete issue). Well, I'll still have a few months to ponder over it :D

you won't really have a choice, you'll have to come to the dark side soon ;)
