I am curious what pleasure books everyone likes to read on their time off. I'm almost finished with this book I've been reading this past week, maybe you can share what are some of favorite books. I might look into them. Lately I have been reading "The Helen Keller Story". It is very sad at first but then it gets quite interesting. I would recommend it to lots of readers. Anyway, go ahead and name a few of your favorite books, this is just for fun. :D

I always carry around the latest issue of Cicada. I love short stories and I read them when I'm stranded somewhere and have time to kill. I know some of you are into art/writing/poetry; have you ever thought about or tried getting any of your work published? I would love to see something in Cicada done by someone I know of...

Hmm... Well I'm writing fan fictions of a story... That would be totally taking over the authors story. But I love writing maybe I should start a story of my own... That would be fun.

I like to read Tipping the Velvet when I'm in a sappy mood, the ending never fails to make me say, "Aww.." Some other really fun books include the Shopaholic series (Sophie Kinsella), or Watermelon by Marien..something (I forget her last name).

Currently I'm working my way through The W Effect: Bush's War on Women, which isn't exactly very fun, but is very interesting.

I'll read anything. I'm currently reading The Collected Poems of Sylvia Plath, just because I started it a couple years ago and never finished it. I just finished A Tale of Two Cities (Charles D.ickens) and will probably next read Holidays on Ice (David Sedaris).

Makar - I will definitely have to look into Cicada, now that you mention it ;)

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy (I can't think of how the first name is spelled...) is an excellent book. I love the Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. :D The Redwall books by Brian Jacques are also good. I like Tolkein's books (Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings) but they're not my favorites.

I'm currently reading Perelandra by C.S. Lewis. His sci-fi trilogy is pretty good so far... Very philosophical, though. :P

I was hoping I could read the Unfortunate envents some time; are the books any good? Also I read some of C.S. Lewis books too, although I never heard of Perelandra before. I might get it at the library sometime...

They're pretty good. Some of my favorites. :) It's basically based on the lives of three orphans and the bad things that happen to them. The first one is pretty sad, but they get better as time goes on. I can't wait for the 11th book. Hehe. The only thing I don't like about them is that after the fourth or fifth book, the author goes back and explains what has happened in previous books, so if you've read all of them, it gets kind of tedious after a while. They go pretty fast. I read the first one in about 30 minutes, so if you want to keep reading, you might want to check out more than one. :buckt:

Yeah... My friend said she read the whole book in just one night... So I best better get a few. They sound interesting though.

I read Agatha Christie, Diana Wynne Jones, Harry Potter, Series of Unfortunate Events... and I read Seedfolks, but that was for summer homework. Anyway. Yeah, the others are what I read for fun. :D

I just finished A Tale of Two Cities (Charles D.ickens)

I've been trying to read that book for about 5 months now, a more interesting one always happens to come along though :P

The last two books I finished were Life of Pi by Yann Martel and Griffin & Sabine by Nick Bantock... the latter was a v. interesting read, it's written entirely in postcards/letters and is just... interesting :P Right now I'm reading the Dante Club by some guy who's probably too smart for his own good, it's all right but started off kind of slow. Though it makes Dante's Divine Comedy sound very intriguing (sp) :P Other books I've started but haven't yet finished: the Thorn Birds, HP 4, Naked Lunch, and some book by Virginia Woolf.

I love the Harry Potter series. Although it's been forever since J.K. Rowling has written another book and she won't tell when there will be anymore! :dead:

I absolutely hate D.ickens haha... he's much too wordy, it gets really annoying.

I really should read more... the last book I read was A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and that was for English class- everyone should read it :P it's good, if for nothing else then the use of language (it's obvious what that means when you start to read it :P)

I have a feeling I won't be doing much reading in terms of novels and such in the near future... that's what I get for not taking an English class this year haha :P

I really like all of the Nicholas Sparks novels. The Wedding is particularly good.

Nah, most of the stuff in there is done by people seventeen and up...they even have Mark Twain and JRR Tolkien stuff, so I don't think there really is an age limit and you can be anyone. Just as long as they like your story/poem, they'll take it.

Plus, you get paid for your submissions!

I like reading too...right now I'm on Invisible Man by Ralph Ellis. (Careful! There are two books with this same title! The other one is by H.G. Wells.)

It's muy interesting, but this isn't the kind of book I can just zip through; I have to force myself to read one chapter a day. :stickout:

I'm reading Brave New World buy A. Huxley. It's summer reading for school but it's really interesting. Freaky too. When I saw the thread title ("pleasure reading") I was all like "isn't this forum rated G?" then my second thought was "guilty pleasure reading". :p When I get depressed or just plain lazy I like to read smutty romance novels. They're hilarious.

I just finished reading Eats, Shoots and Leaves. Funny. Grammar can be very entertaining. I also enjoyed The Secret Life of Bees, though I did read it for school.

My favorites are The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, though I also like detective ones (Agatha Christie's, Sherlock Holmes) and sometimes history/politic ones (Animal Farm, A Tale of Two Cities), though I'm probably forgetting lots (oh, yeah, The Secret Garden too) I love to read. Put a cereal box in front of me during breakfast and I'll even read that too (why is it so hard to hold a book open with one hand while eating with the other???).

I have that problem. I read food packaging. I won a debate in class because of that. We were debating whether Nutella or Peanut butter was better, and the opposition said something about how peanut butter was worse because of peanut allergies. I then said that the two pricipal ingredients in nutella were sugar and peanut oil.

Someone in my English class in 5th grade did that...

I've wanted to read it, but my mom has this problem with me buying books ("It's better to get them from the library!"), and I can't find it at the local library...(of course, our library sucks...) I think it's out in paperback now, actually...but I'm not sure...

this summer. i read at least 60 harlequin romance novels. XP not for the kiddies. oh wait... anyway. i only got thru 4 of the Wheel of Time series. it's a bit slow. i read all of the series of unfourtunate events. and LotR. and harry potter series atleast twice. and the DaVinci Code, plus Angels and Demons(by dan brown) I ADORE the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde it's literary humor. really funny. and they kill off a di.ckens chara, so all your di.ckens revenge fantasies... ... anyway. i forced myself through ^^^^ens once. Great Expectations. bleargh. hmm. oh blood and chocolate is good for fantasy-loving teens(girls). and i read a lot of Everworld(KA Applegate), before the series died(she stopped writing in the middle of a plot arc-_-;;). The Princess Bride was good...hrmmm... oh, and The Fairy Godmother, by Mercedes Lackey was good too. i also (SOMEHOW) managed to get thru Dr. Zhivago this summer. >< in a week, no less. (russian names seem harder to me). For a good teen angst/ verse book. there's this book called Jinx written entirely in verse, about a girl who is very unlucky in love>>... anyway. if i think of anything else, i'll postpost! ^_^

:) I've become a bit of a "collector" of pleasure books during the Harry Potter hiatuses... Has anyone read:

Eva Ibbotson's books
Charlie Bone series
Cornelia Funke's books
John Bellaris/Brad Strickland's books...

to name a few...

It took me a little while to get into "A Tale of Two Cities" - but I was crying at the end and truly loved it...

:zebra:

...Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell...

has anyone read this one yet?
